Atticus Finch As a Strong Moral Character

Categories: Harper Lee

“A leader is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead.” The story takes place in Maycomb with the Finch family, Atticus gets a life changing case with Tom. After losing the case Bob attacked Scout and Jem. However Boo Radley, a silent mysterious neighbor came to rescue them. Throughout all the problems Atticus remains a character with good qualities. Harper Lee establishes that Atticus Finch is a good leader, and a strong moral character, by using point of view, metaphor, and characterization.

Point of view is used to show how Atticus is a good leader. When Jem and Scout got attacked by Bob, Atticus thought Jem killed Bob; so he said “Sometimes I think I’m a total failure as a parent, but I’m all they’ve got”. Aticus’s point of view on himself is that he is not the greatest person, he admits he can be wrong. That is what he thinks and sees of himself.

Atticus didn’t mean to literally crawl into her skin, he meant to be more understanding to others. Lee is using a metaphor to make Atticus seem strong moraled. In other words, he wants to teach Scout to be more sympathetic, because that is what he believes in. Lee used metaphor to provide evidence that Atticus is a strong moraled character, another way is characterization.

Lee used metaphor to provide evidence that Atticus is a strong moraled character, another way is characterization. Scout expressed her feelings about a character in a book to Atticus by saying “Atticus he was real nice… Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them”. Lee is using indirect characterization to indicate that Atticus wants Scout to really get to know a person before judging them. Furthermore Atticus’s dialogue represents his characteristic. A quality of a good leader is to have influence on others, and he stuck with his morals to be compassionate. Through all of these literary devices including characterization, it proves Atticus is both a good leader and a strong moraled character.
