What if humans hunted each other as a sport, instead of animals? 'The Most Dangerous Game' by Richard Conell is a short story about a professional hunter who is tired of hunting animals and wants to try something dangerous.. hunting humans. The short story presents two characters that have experienced the danger of hunting during the course of their lives.
There are many distinctive literary techniques an author can use to create a story. These literary techniques can help create a plot, set the scene, and build anticipation in their writing.
As Connell begins 'The Most Dangerous Game', he uses conversation with Rainsford and Whitney that foreshadows a main conflict. As Rainsford and Whitney stand on the deck of the yacht, Rainsford explains, 'The world is made up of two classes - the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are the hunters'. This Foreshadowing technique shows that the story will change and the hunters might soon be in danger.
This prepares the reader for a plot twist to happen.
Later in the story, Whitney talks about the island saying, 'An evil place can, so to speak, broadcast vibrations of evil'. This foreshadows something evil is about to happen later in the story. The author's use of foreshadowing works because it prepares the reader for a change to happen. Conell's use of foreshadowing is also effective, because it helps to create the mood and conflict in the story.
Overall, Conell uses foreshadowing to set the scene and the readers mind for events to come.
This literary technique pulls the reader in the story, and makes the story more interesting.
