Analysis Of The Movie Amelie

Amelie is a french film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the film was released in November of 2001 and the genre is a Romance/Comedy.

Amelie’s clothing choice, hairstyle, and her makeup have a very 1920’s/30’s inspired style, but with a modern twist to it. Amelie’s clothing (which is typically a simple sundress) coupled with her hairstyle (1920’s black bob with short bangs) helped to add a naivety to her character as well as helping the audience view her more as a innocent young woman.

There’s almost a whimsical look to her, which complements the setting/location of the film (Paris). Even though Amelie is set in present (2000/2001) day setting scenery which we see when modern cars are driving by Amelie on the street, combined with the props such as the kiosk and the metro sign in front of the metro station (in the clip) and Amelie’s style creates a vintage feel that one thinks of when they envision Paris.

The lighting also add to the whimsical feel the film gives. The lighting outdoors is very bright, but not too bright to where it takes away from the characters or the scene. The lighting helps enhance the vintage theme. The lighting is almost like a sepia tone, it gives the viewer a warm feeling. In the clip we see Amelie watching a blind man trying to cross the street, she rushes up to him and guides him along the street and during this scene they are the only characters noticeably facing the sun while some are shown in the shadows, giving them a sense of importance and a greater focus on them.

The narrative is that Amelie is a warm, playful, and helpful person and the lighting incorporated with the lively coloring is very warm and welcoming which adds to the characters narrative, that she is also warm and welcoming. The lighting helps to create a friendly mood/atmosphere as well as the characters state of mind rather than pushing the story forward.

Without context it’s a little hard to understand the overall goal Amelie has. It is clear though that she wants to help others. With every good deed (helping the blind man down the street) Amelie does she becomes close to the stronger and confident woman she was destined to be. These acts help to open the door/push the narrative forward to the next chapter in her story, which will be her becoming strong/confident enough to make an interaction with her love interest. Throughout the scene there’s a lot of quick shots and it’s a little all over the place and that adds the playfulness of Amelie’s (character) narrative.
