Since 1775 with the Revolutionary War to 1991 with the Persian Gulf War we have had the armed forces protecting the United States. They have had a big influence on why America is what it is today. Most people don t think about who fights the wars for us but there are many reasons why they should. To be in the army you have to have lots of different qualifications. There are four main qualifications that are a must.

Patience is the first qualification. You have to have lots of patience to learn what they have to teach you. Loyalty is also very important. You have to be loyal to your country to be able to fight for them and risk your life. Another main qualification is that you have to be smart. In the armed forces whether or not there is a war you have to be a quick thinker. If you don t have quick-thinking skills it could cost you your life even if there isn t a war since people practice shooting guns.

The last main qualification is courage. The people that fight for us must have loads of courage to be able to go and fight for America. Our army has survived through centuries of wars. The main one they fought in was the Civil War because it was only the United States fighting. The sides were the Union States and the Confederate States. This war was all about slavery. In this war the veterans could have been fighting against their family but they stayed loyal to their sides.

It was in this war that we lost the most Americans. Even though there is an age limit to be in the army, many men that were under the age limit joined. They only joined when the armed forces were in need of men that at least knew how to shoot a gun. Most of the time this was only when we were in a war. Many of the people that died were still young. We have two major holidays to honor the armed forces and veterans. Veteran s Day is to show our appreciation for anyone that was or is in the armed forces. It also includes their family. On Veteran s Day most families go the Vietnam Wall and leave little gifts. Some of the gifts they would leave would be a flower or something from their past that means something to them. The second holiday we celebrate is Memorial Day. Memorial Day is to honor the memory of all the people who died in the wars that we have fought. On Memorial Day most of the families go to the cemetery and pay their respects. Even if you don t have a family member who is or was in the armed forces, you should still acknowledge them. It shouldn t have to be a holiday for you to give thanks for them. If it weren t for them, America probably wouldn t be like it is today.
