Ever advancing, technology has increasingly become more and more a part of the daily lives of humans. Screens appear to be surrounding, cameras are omnipresent, and sensors seem to be watching every movement made. To some, this sounds like a nightmare turned into a reality, however, most of the technology created has been designed to help make the everyday flow of life easier. The technology that is used to enhance and simplify daily tasks is called ambient intelligence. It is intriguing to see how this type of technology works, is integrated into the environment, affects the jobs of interior designers, and where it could go in the future.

To start with the basics, ambient intelligence, simply put, is all about the awareness of technology. The technology needs to be able to process and be aware of the presence of people, their identities, and contexts of the environment, such as the weather and traffic, and the technology also has to be able to recognize certain activities and motions as well as be able to adapt to the changing needs of individuals (Ambient Intelligence - The Ultimate IoT Use Cases).

One of the most common ways that it collects information is through speech recognition and natural language processing, since these are the most common and natural ways that humans interact with each other, people expect to interact with ambient intelligence in the same way. The technology collects this data and information through the use of microphones, written sequences, and computer vision (Guest Editors). After receiving and processing this information, the ambient intelligence uses it to predict what action it needs to do, as well as complete said action.

Although the processing portion of ambient intelligence is important, and even more important factor is whether it can be successfully accepted and integrated into the lives of people. Because, no matter how well a piece of technology can perform its intended task or serve its purpose if it is not accepted by the people and they refuse to use it, the resources that went into it were sort of a waste. To ensure that this does not happen and that ambient intelligence is accepted, there are a couple of requirements that a product is suggested to have met before being presented to the public. These are tphonehat the product is easy to use, a person should not have to read a manual to figure out how to get it to work, it should be simple enough that it comes naturally, it should be reliable and have fail-safe measures in place so that it does not go rogue, and lastly, it should be trustworthy. This technology and intelligence will be gathering and collecting data on people and their identities, so to ensure privacy, the technology should have data security to ease the minds of the people (Ambient Intelligence - The Ultimate IoT Use Cases). If a piece of technology or intelligence meets all of these requirements, it should have no problem being integrated into the environment it's placed.

After a piece of ambient intelligence haphones successfully been integrated into the environment, it usually becomes so common that people do not even realize that it is there. There is more ambient intelligence integrated into today’s society and environment than people think. One of the most common ambient intelligence devices is Amazon’s Alexa (Ambient Intelligence - The Ultimate IoT Use Cases). Some of the more subtle technologies are the use of “mobile, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other energy-saving communications enable any wireless device to connect” and be controlled “from almost anywhere” (Home Automation). There is also noticeably more ambient intelligence being added into homes. For example, there are lightbulbs, televisions, cars, and even refrigerators that now connect to the internet and allow people to control them from their phone. This technology is being added to more and more items and utilities in the home, and it is expected that 50 billion devices will be connected to the internet by the year 2020 (Home Automation).

That automation of devices within the home is where the obstacles of interior designers come into play. With all of the new technology, designers will have more options than ever to choose from when designing and decorating whatever home or building they are working on, however, having more options is never really a problem. The real issue, is trying to figure out how to incorporate this new technology into their designs without making it stand out as well as considering how their clients are going to interact with the technology. Interior designers have to base their designs on environmental psychology, human factors, and ergonomics. That being said, it essentially means that they have to “examine how the mind interprets (and responds to) space” and consider the “nonconscious communication” happening between the person and the space, objects, and furniture around them (Stephenson). Keep in mind that for each design there is a new client, who has different tastes and preferences than the last one. While one client may want technology everywhere it could be, and make it so, another client may want it to be more discreet, therefore leaving the designer to figure out a way to incorporate the new ambient intelligence into the home while keeping the natural flow between the human and the home. While this is a new material for designers, it is something that they will have to learn how to work with because it is not going away anytime soon the opposite is quite true.

Along with the 50 billion devices expected to be connected to the internet, it is also expected that “by 2022, 1 trillion networked sensors will be embedded in the world around us, with up to 45 trillion in 20 years” (Ambient Intelligence: What’s Next for the Internet of Things). With this increase and continuing advancement in ambient intelligence, completely automated homes are not far away. People can already control their air conditioning and heating, security systems, lights, audio and video, and even some of their appliances from their phones or program them to run independently for the most part (Ambient Intelligence: What’s Next for the Internet of Things). Soon, it might even be likely that a home such as the one described in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, where there is floor to ceiling interactive televisions and a built-in omniscient program that can be asked a question and will give the answer and can control appliances in the home just by giving a command (Bradbury). Which, the second part sounds slightly like the Amazon Alexa, which some might say is a pretty good sign that we are already on that pathway.

Ambient technology is becoming more and more a part of the hustle and bustle of daily lives. It’s evolving to be able to easily meet the needs of humans without getting in their way. It’s also being integrated into homes, causing interior designers to figure out how to incorporate ambient technology without disrupting the natural interaction of humans and their homes. Designers will also be seeing a lot more ambient technology in the future, as there are more advances every day toward a world where almost everything can be controlled with just a simple command.
