Abortion should be the right of every women given to them in the nineteenth amendment, therefore the state of Alabama does not have the right to create obstacles to prevent abortion. Forcing a woman to give birth no matter what reason, does not always mean the life of the child is saved. If the child will come to an unwanted world or to a family who does not have the ability to support themselves, the child is condemn to a life of torture.
During 2019, Alabama had 800,000 Alabamians living below poverty thresholds (Apadmin 2019) and 243,880 children were struggling with hunger (Feeding America 2019). This issue should be taken care of by the nation because abortion is a key part of women’s liberty, equality, and economic security. Therefore, the U.S should make sure the law of abortion being legal is obeyed by all states.
Making obstacles to prevent women form abortion is violating the first and the nineteenth amendment. The first amendment is being violated because women can express their freedom of speech and their religion with their decision of abortion.
Freedom of speech is not only words, but it also includes actions taken to oppose something they do not agree on. For religion, there are some religions who treat abortion as a sin such as the Roman Catholic Church, but there are also religions who favor a woman’s right to have an abortion with few or no exceptions (Masci 2016). The nineteenth amendment is violated because its not giving the equality the women should have.
Why can men do as they please with their body but not women? Women have the right to treat their body anyway they want if it does not affect any other person. In this case, a fetus is can not be counted as a separate human being due to being inside the mother’s body. In 2019, Alabama passed an abortion law known as Alabama Human Life Act. This act made abortion almost impossible for women in Alabama. Yes, abortion is still legal in the state, but this act can make any doctor or person who performs an abortion get a Class A felony and get a jail time of 20 years. All the events that lead up to women having their freedom such as Roe v. Wade can not be taken in vain. Federal judge Myron Thompson did his part when trying to halt this Act on Oct 29, 2019, but unfortunately was overruled (Berry 2019).
Alabama is not the only state with that mind set. The state of Georgia is very similar and wants to follow the steps of Alabama in creating a law that will affect the people doing the abortion. We can also see this type of ideology in another country states such as in Ireland and El Salvador. Both places are extremely restricting abortion, causing women not to have access to safe abortion and/or being charged with aggravated homicide (Amnesty International 2015). In contrast with Alabama, we have a good example of states who respect the women’s right such as California, Nevada, and Oregon. In this state, every woman can find safe abortion options near them and they can decide what they want to do with their body without any restrictions.
With the Alabama Human Life Act, Alabama is just adding one more obstacle that minorities must overcome. We can take Mexicans and Blacks for example, these population already has a huge disadvantage against white because they are discriminated. Both races are more likely be forced to take unsafe actions because of the inequality. Minorities are a huge part of the lower social-economic group that also may not have insurance and will most likely go to a unsafe form of abortion to hide from the government and avoid having a child they will not be able to support economic wise.
The public opinion about abortion in the U.S. is very even, 40% of the people lean towards abortion, 40% leans towards abolishing abortion and the rest of the 20% do not care about the situation. The political parties also have a different view of this issue. Democrats or “The Party of Death” are in for abortion because they know it is the right of the women, but republicans are against abortion all the way.
Legislative branch already made abortion legal in the U.S., Executive branch oversaw the law went into effect, now the Judicial branch is the one who needs to interpret the law correctly to all states. The judges from all states should obey the law but instead, they have some representatives, like in Alabama, who have tried to find loopholes and abuse their power to avoid what they do not believe in. The government should create an agency that can make sure the rights of the women are carried out in every state.
A solution must be found for all women to have equal rights across the U.S. One way to create a solution would be to have a vote among the population to see what the law should be. That way, everyone can give their opinions and women can voice out. Make similar as an election, fair and square for everyone. Or the other simple solution, leave it up to the women. Have abortion available, but each woman will decide what they believe in. They will have their right to do whatever they please with their body and if they are against abortion, they are not forced to do anything they do not want.
What you need to do is to make the state of Alabama re-evaluate their abortion law and make them take it down. If this is not done, the people in favor of abortion, which is the majority of Texans, will make sure you are not re-elected in the upcoming elections. Every woman should have equal rights and the option to have a safe abortion. The Alabama Human Life Act need to be shut down, no other anti-abortion state needs to get the idea from Alabama on how to evade the law. If this law-breaking act is left alone, many other states could adopt a similar act and overuse their state power.
As a member of the democrat party, you need to empower abortion such as many of the other democrat party members. Most current running democrats are in favor that abortion should be up to the women, and not the opinions of states. At the moment no legislation or court is pending about this issue, but as our representative of District 34, our voice needs to be heard through you. All the citizens need to make a stand and voice their opinion to help Alabama women overcome this. This is a government by the people for the people, meaning that if people unite, they can make the necessary changes.
