The Time Machine written by H.G. Wells is a novella based on science and his love for time machines. The Time Machine is about a Time Traveler that ventures into the future to find out humanity has two races. The Eloi are very beautiful, graceful, and they do not work at all. The Morlocks, however; are known as the lower class “human rats,” they do not wear clothes, and they work all the time. H.G. Wells wrote The Time Machine in recognition that mankind was divided and showcased what the human race devolved to by the use of imagery, tone, and symbolism.

H.G. Wells used imagery to put a picture in one’s head by describing, using the five senses. This quote explains how the fire looks and the sounds it gave off as well. “It was my first fire coming after me... The hissing and crackling behind me, the explosive thud as each fresh tree burst into flame” (Wells 62).

It explains how the fire looks, so the scene is more realistic and frightening. It gives a scientific and emotional appeal. Therefore, the quote makes the reader understand the text by putting a detailed vision in one’s mind.

H.G. Wells incorporated tone to add “attitude” towards the reader and was expressed throughout the book as scientific, sad, dark, etc. This quote has a dark/ threatening tone to it. “And along the margin where the water sometimes broke was a thick incrustation of salt- pink under the lurid sky.

There was a sense of oppression in my head, and I noticed that I was breathing fast” (Wells 68). Therefore, this quote has a very deep and gloomy tone to it and it makes the reader understand the “feeling” of the text.

The symbolism in The Time Machine, provides a picture of H.G. Wells’ ideas and makes clear the things he encounters. This quote is very dark and mysterious, and it makes you wonder. “The enemy I dreaded may surprise you. It was the darkness of the new moon. Weena had put this into my head by some at first incomprehensible remarks about the Dark Nights” (Wells 48). The quote is thought of as evil. In The Time Machine, everything bad that happens, happens in the dark, so it is very ominous and scary and it contrasts with the hope of flowers. Therefore, this quote is very creepy and eerie and it makes the story more interesting.

Wells separated the classes well and described what society was like (in The Time Machine) with great detail.
