A Movie Review of Bullworth by Warren Beaty

Warren Beaty makes a heroic attempt to tell people what they need to hear in the dramatic comedy, Bullworth. As the director and star of the movie, he portrays a senator, in the midst of a suicidal breakdown, saying exactly what he thinks rather than what he is supposed to say. An unpredictable movie, Bullworth kept my attention until the very end. The casting was well done, with Mr. Beaty, Hally Barry and several other big stars appearing throughout the movie.

And the idea for a senator to tell nothing but the truth and not politically correct is nothing less than phenomenal. But, while a great concept for a movie, it was over stereotyped and tastelessly vulgar in too many scenes. The movie begins with Senator Bullworths breakdown. Warren Beaty portrays the ideal senator with a warm, friendly smile, handsome face, with family values that are sure to get him reelected in the primaries.

This is the most believable character for Warren Beaty, especially after his publicity in the last presidential election as being a possible candidate for President.

Shortly after the breakdown, however, Beatys persona flips around and suddenly he no longer plays the professional senator. With the new personality, comes a new character that now tells the citizens the truth about what politics is all about. After some exposure to a different lifestyle, Bullworth now uses rapping in his new campaign of truth. Hilarious at first, the rapping soon became painful to watch and listen to. It was way over used and was too well written to be as spontaneous as the movies writers wanted you to think.

About the same time as the rapping is first introduced, Hally Barry, as Nina, becomes Bullworths love interest. Although already sounding stereotypical, this was a great opportunity for the story to part from the usual one racelage/class relationship.

Bullworth is a middle-aged wealthy, Caucasian and Nina is a young, African-American woman raised and living in a rough area of the city. If the writers had only stuck with the idea of staying away from stereotypes, the movie would not lead me to feel nauseated when it was over. The remainder of the movie was filled with stereotypes of African-Americans living in poverty, uneducated and dealing drugs. There was vulgar language in nearly every sentence and upon finishing the movie, the viewer has no better concept of the African-American race than when they began the movie. Of course the writers of the movie did this on purpose because they want you to believe that African-Americans are like this because of screwed-up politics. This may very well be part of the reason, but if this movie were intended to have any impact on the audience, a more sympathetic approach would have been much more effective. Adding a corrupt police officer that threatens the black children didnt help matters either. While making this even-out the ignorance of each portrayed race, it once again used a few recent headlines to become the stereotyped idiosyncrasy of all policemen placed into the same situation. Much to my surprise, Bullworth ends in a twist. Just when you think that the guy gets the girl, becomes the hero and everything ends happily ever after, Bullworth gets shot and dies.

Quite a shocker and not necessarily what I wanted to see happen but it does give a little jolt to an otherwise monotonous film. Looking back at the story, I applaud the writers in their attempt to write a motion picture to impact society. They tried to make this into something everyone can relate to or understand. What they ended up actually creating was an insulting film that used comedy and stereotypes to deal with a serious situation facing this country. The large use of vulgarity and sexual innuendoes was randomly placed in the script to keep the younger generations interest but otherwise was totally unnecessary. If you plan to see Bullworth, go into it with low expectations, that way youll only be slightly disappointed.
