What is Cultural Intelligence?

Cultural Intelligence is well defined as knowing the environment and culture of a country as every country has its own aspects of language, religion, caste, and understanding. It is important to have knowledge about every culture to communicate and live in this country of immigrants. Every individual needs to have the basics to work within an organization which could be possible by having cultural intelligence. By high cultural intelligence, we can get many benefits such as team effectiveness, clear understanding in leadership, and understanding other people’s views and realities.

Nowadays, most people move to diverse countries. Here, Canada people can get more opportunities to work with different people. Through teamwork, people can understand the value of cultural intelligence. Cultural Intelligence is vital for gaining success in a diverse country.

Like other immigrants, I am here in Canada from India. In every country, identity is a feeling of belonging to a group. Identity is mostly a part of self-perception. Identity makes a person different from others at one time.

I would like to share my experience as I was an introvert person in past because of which I came to face many problems in Canada. In a diverse workplace, I feel difficulty to understand the culture of other people. Now, I have transformed my behavior into extrovert nature so that I could easily adapt the various multicultural situations. Personal identity makes us different from others under our culture by different personality traits. Every person has their own different personality trait. I belong to extroversion because extroverts are open communicators and sociable with others.

In Canada, I understand that how people communicate with each other and in a group with respecting each other.

As I belong from the Sikh culture which leads a unique identity all over the World. Sikhs are known for their act of bravery and courage among the people. They are serving their culture and religion by respecting and continuing their values of sharing and speaking the truth as it belongs to their religion. Khalsa Aid is an organization which is in the UK. It has the worldwide volunteers attached to each other. The word ‘AID’ itself means help. They are doing the act of humanity by helping people who are suffering from poverty and unemployment throughout the world. There are many charitable organizations that are run by the Sikh community. Cultural identity belongs to the individual culture’s perceptions, attitudes, behaviors, communication, and motivation. Every culture is socialized in our occupations, careers, religion, language, citizenship, and living style.

There are common needs and desires of every person in this World which are important to know to work together in an Organization. As Canada is a country of immigrants, it is must to have cultural intelligence. Something good to one culture could be bad for other cultures. Therefore, to make collaboration among cross-functional ideas and diversification, cultural intelligence is valuable to be knowledgeable. It is important for every individual to have the skills of knowing values, beliefs, attitudes, and body language which makes the steps to have cultural intelligence. The person who is intelligent to know the values means to know the cultural manners, rules, and regulations which are grateful to make a positive environment and make everyone comfortable in the workplace. Secondly, beliefs are the trust in every religion which must be respected by every person and are must to know to give respect to everyone. Moving further, attitudes are the behavior and nature of a person (likes and dislikes) which reflects the personality of a person. It is the most important aspect which makes the place comfortable to a person. Lastly, Body language is the physical appearance of showing gestures and having the knowledge of gestures are a must in Canada. For instance, eye contact is considered as a good policy otherwise, it is an act of ignorance by someone. Therefore, knowing these four aspects leads the person to have the best quality of cultural intelligence.

In the gist of this topic, I would like to say there are many cultures in a world and every person has their own abilities, customs, and knowledge to live in a diverse workplace. By understanding, other culture’s beliefs, values, we can get the highest capability in cultural intelligence. With understanding, interest, practice, and motivation anyone can learn cultural intelligence. With high cultural intelligence, we can understand that yes, we may not travel the world, but the world can come to us by different cultures. If we have an understanding of different cultures and values, then we can see the world without visit anywhere. God has made all human beings equal and we should respect each culture.
