Animation all started with just a few ideas which then continued to improve over the many years that we have had animations. The first thoughts and inventions of animations began at a very early time of 3,000 B.C. In 3,000 B.C., the first idea of characters in motion was beginning to form on the side of a cup. A goat was pictured there and it was to look like it was in the action of leaping. This marked the beginning of one of the most successful eras for our country and the world.

Leonardo de Vinci also was a big part of this new era. He created a man with many different stances of a man’s body to show movement. This was yet another idea that was about to change the history of our country as we know it. The first ever animation show was created in 1906.

Of course, it was not like the films that we have today. It was created using a technique called stop photography.

A couple of years later in 1908, the first hand-drawn animation film was presented. It was also described as the first animated cartoon. Of course, there had to be a character that set animations off for a successful ride. Felix the cat was the first animation that became a star. Felix was created by Feline Follies and Musical Mews. After many years of animations after animations there was yet another first idea from an animator in Walt Disney Studios. This animator made the first sound printed onto his animation.

This animation featured Mickey Mouse who is one of the most famous characters still today.

These are just a few of the ideas that got animation to where it is today. Inventions in technology also helped this era become a huge movement across our world. Emile Cohl Before Walt Disney came to be, there were many other amazing animators before him that rarely get recognized for their work today. Emile Cohl was one of the greats that was born in 1857. The wonderful city of Paris welcomed him into the world. Emile Cohl was not at all interested in animations, and he knew little about them. When he reached his adulthood, Emile Cohl was elected director of different shows. These shows were not animations, but they were things such as comedies and fantasies. He knew a lot about these things, but he knew little about animations and animators of his day. Soon, the thought began to creep into his head. It kept coming and kept coming until finally he was so interested that he decided that he would give it a try. He wanted to learn as much as he could about this. He got so serious with this new work that he created a book of his animations which was called Fantasy.

He was drawing and creating all the time. His work expresses his passion for animations like most never did. He got more and more famous and more and more wealthy until the Great Depression struck. All of the wealth had turned into poverty for Cohl. In 1938, Cohl died of pneumonia in his home country of France. His work still lives on to this day and is still recognized by other animators. Georges Melies In 1861, George Melies was born. Like Emile Cohl, he was born in Paris France. He was in the business of a film director and an illusionist. He became famous for his use of special effects that most of us know of today in the modern world. His passion for films began to increase as his life moved forward and away from his unsupportive family. He began to fulfill his dreams by creating many films of his own. His name became well-known for his many works of filming. His international fame was rising mostly because of his newly found special effect he found by his camera not filming.

He was then even more interested in his films using more special techniques than ever before. Until one day when everything began to change. People were stealing his works and tweaking them to make it like it was their own. Melies began to struggle to even keep up with the modern times. His film audiences were suddenly empty. All of this came upon him so quickly that he decided that he should not continue this work. After many years, people began to rediscover his films once again, but Melies spent the rest of his days with his family at home. He died of in 1938, but his memory still lives on today through his famous shows and his contribution to the new era. Winsor McCay In the September of 1867, another major contribution to the new animation era came into this world. Winsor McCay was a creator of several different newspaper comic strips. A few became well-known.

The one in particular that hit a peak was “Gertie the Dinosaur.”This particular comic strip character was McCay’s pathway to worldwide fame. He continued to create different characters and comics for newspapers with his world fame. He devoted all of his time and effort into giving people what they expected and wanted of him. He was a full time animator. McCay was also one of the main influences of the animation era. All of his life he worked for this new era, and he helped it improve to this today. He gave his life to animation until his final day when he died of a stroke. His memory, passion, and loyalty to this era still remains with us today through the characters that he created for us all. J. Stuart Blackton In the January of 1875, yet another influence on this animation era was born.

Blackton interviewed Thomas Edison in 1895 to learn about his career and interests. He was so interested in the filming and animations that he decided to create a company with another man and developed his first film. He was so devoted to his career that was inspired by Thomas Edison. He continued to create films with his partner Albert Smith. He enjoyed all of his works thoroughly. He kept on creating more and more films that became more and more successful. Soon, Blackton was a millionaire. This career had changed his life for the better. He continued his marvelous works for several years. Suddenly, a depression struck and Blackton was involved. His millionaire works were no longer millions. He had lost his money. He tried to support himself with smaller shows, and they helped him get through this terrible time. He pushed his career through all of these rough times until his death in 1941.

His devotion to the new era is still appreciated my the modern world. Eadweard J. Muybridge In 1830, Muybridge was born to a family in England. He moved out to the United States several years later. Photography was his life. He photographed many different things that were around him or had an influence on his life. He wanted to learn and experiment with photography more and more. He went on several trips and took motion pictures of animals crossing or passing by him. He even published a book with his pictures. He was an influence on our modern era today.
