The Veldt and The Sound of Thunder

Categories: Ray Bradbury The Veldt

Although technology is a great way to stay entertained and learn new things, there's much more behind it then revealed. In multiple science fiction books, such as “The Veldt and The Sound of Thunder,” characters show how electronics negatively affect their thoughts, emotions, behavior, and actions.

“The Veldt” written by “Ray Bradbury,” proves the effect of technology on thoughts and emotions. For Example: “You know how difficult Peter is about that. When I punished him a month ago by locking the nursery for even a few hours — the tantrum he threw! And Wendy too.

They live for the nursery.” “(passage number: 44)” This quote confirms that Peter and Wendy’s addiction to the nursery has become a major point of concern. “Good, we must get going. At a distance, Mr. McClean saw the lions fighting and clawing and then quieting down to feed in silence under the shady trees. He squinted at the lions with his hand tip to his eyes.” “(passage 261 and 262)” This shows how the children experienced intense emotions and became so violent that they committed a crime.

Wendy and Peter from “The Veldt” are a perfect example of how children's thoughts are adversely affected in real life due to technology.

“The Veldt” is just one of the sci-fi books that demonstrates technology's bad impact on people's behavior. For instance: “They ran into the nursery. The veldtland was empty save for the lions waiting, looking at them. Peter, Wendy? The door slammed.” “(passage 245 and 246)” Since the parents were willing to close the nursery for good, Peter and Wendy have decided to trap their parents inside it with lions, to get them killed.

The kids took this decision without hesitating. “Oh, so now you admit you have been conjuring up Africa, do you? I wouldn’t want the nursery locked up, said Peter coldly. Ever.” “( passage 155 and 156)” Clearly, there’s an association between the bad use of technology and the kid’s bad behavior. This has been well illustrated when the child begins to argue with his parents. “The Veldt” demonstrates that technology truly impacts people’s behavior.

“The Sound Of Thunder” shows how technology affects people’s actions. Take the case of: “Not knowing it, we might kill an important animal, a small bird, a roach, a flower even, thus destroying an important link in a growing species” “(passage 33)” This quote shows that without noticing, people might make minor mistakes that will build up and result in a major future problem. “The stomp of your foot, on one mouse, could start an earthquake, the effects of which could shake our earth and destinies down through Time, to their very foundations.” “(passage 39)” This illustrates that minor actions could lead to unpredictable problems that will change someone’s life and affect them constantly. “The Sound Of Thunder,” is a great science fiction book that demonstrates technology's effect on people's actions.

Despite its positive benefits, when overused, technology becomes a real threat to human thoughts, emotions, behavior, and actions. Electronics have almost replaced relationships which wastes quality time people should be spending with their families or friends. Devices have produced several changes in the human’s lifestyle and have led to many mental and physical health issues.“The Veldt, and The Sound of Thunder” remind us of our experience with the recent boom in technology. We have gone through many minor changes throughout the years which lead to the current transformation in our lifestyle.
