Technology has made such wonderful and useful creations possible for mankind to achieve but is there a limit to how far a creator should be able to create before one surpasses the boundaries of mankind? The power that technology allows one person to possess can be dangerous if used for the wrong reasons. Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein (1818) is a good example of how a great idea can go bad because of not thinking of the aftermath of the consequences. In this case, it is Dr.
Frankenstein creating the Monster for selfish reasons and not thinking about what the outcome will be.
Victor uses his technology and knowledge to create a living being. He feels that this creation will put him above all his peers. Victor at this point is not thinking about any repercussions that his creation may bring. Victor describes his reaction with 'For this, I had deprived myself of rest and health. I had desired it with an ardor that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart'(Shelley 35-36).
This shows that Victor feels that if he would have thought about the consequences of his creation he would have not participated in the creation of the creature. The power of how strong technology can become resides within the creation. Victor cannot handle the truth of what he has created and runs from it. The Monster is left alone to wonder why his creator abandon him.
Throughout the novel, the creation becomes filled with hate and revenge. The creation soon becomes Victors worst nightmare as it slowly starts to takVictor'se everything away from Victor. Victor is tested once again when the creation demands that he create him a mate to spend his time with. Victor agrees to create a companion for the creation but has second thoughts after beginning the creation and decides to destroy the second creature. Victor sees the power he has and stops it. Victor finally sees the consequences of his creations and decides to go and hunt down the first creation.
With the growth of technology in the modern era more and more is starting to become possible with the knowledge this generation has. Victor simply created a being, and in the end, could not control it. The creation evolved and surpassed the knowledge of mankind. One creation can overcome the creator with overwhelming power and the creator cannot control it. Society nowadays is always looking to make things better and faster, but at what cost? In today's fast-paced society it is important to learn from mistakes, like Victor's, and take the proper steps to ensure they don't happen. Frankenstein’s monster was not evil originally, its first action was to grin, however circumstances surrounding its early life made it into the murderer it became. Upon the creature's first meeting with Frankenstein, he was well-spoken and refused to fight Frankenstein instead pleading with him to listen to what he had to say and show compassion.
This can not only pertain to a person's life but also to simple choices you make throughout the day. In the case of someone's well-being, the scenario should be played out over and over before making the final choice. If Victor would have taken these steps before creating the creature, maybe he would have lived a longer and happier life. In other cases sometimes the resolution to a situation is to avoid the situation altogether.
