"The Servant" by James C. Hunter had made an extensive impact on business world. This insightful work of art is even integrated in company leadership trainings. The story teaches that in order for one to lead, one should first serve. And through service, a businessman finds out the importance of humbleness in reliable leadership.
The story has to do with a business person named John Daily. The lead character of the story had actually gone through a lot of depressing difficulties concerning his life at work and at house.
In the course of the story, John Daily had the opportunity to be mull over his life in a serene monastery. There he satisfied an effective entrepreneur who now goes for the ascetic life of a monk.
The bulk of the story is about what the monk calls as “servant leadership.” The book had used the life of Jesus as model for servant leadership. The book argues that although Jesus did not have the money and influence of King Herod, more people are attracted to him and the subordinates of Jesus remain loyal to their lord.
The book suggests that Jesus became an effective leader because of his humility. It could also be interpreted that Jesus is such an effective leader that even up to this point, his followings are still expanding exponentially.
What the book wants to teach us is the concept of humility. The virtue of humility is what attracts people towards an individual. Business is not a one man endeavor; it requires a lot of socializing and working with other people.
If a businessman could learn to be humble, one will be more likely to be an effective leader.
