Many patients go undiagnosed with depression and for those that are diagnosed, half of them are left untreated. There has been a significant increase in depression in youth with the lowest income, highest education, and highest income. (Weinberger et al.) The monetary crisis has been hitting university students as students are going further into debt. The current job market is plummeting which makes it harder for recent graduates to find jobs. Millennials have higher expectations as compared to the generation before them as what was required to be completed in ten years has to now be accomplished within two years. The added pressures of civilization have crippled the millennials as they struggle to cope with stress or social pressures. A contributory factor to depression and mental health is the effects of social media on the current generation.

The millennials have grown accustomed to the technological revolution that has occurred over the past few years. Along with technology bringing advances into the community, it has had a huge setback on communication. The online web has created an opportunity for individuals to promote cyberbullying, false images, and procrastination. As we had earlier defined that positive mental health encourages an individual to live up to their fullest potential. Technological advancements, this has altered young minds to be deprived of society. Recent studies have shown a correlation between increased time spent on social media with more chance of depicting symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation as compared to those who spend off doing homework, sports, or being active in school. (Twenge et al.) Increased use of social media has contributed to millennials lacking personal skills. Communication has become a language barrier as it decreases in-person interaction thus affecting psychological safety. In young female teenagers, the concept of social media has brought upon self-doubt and anxiety about body image. Diseases such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa are becoming common terms to better fit the societiessociety'sthe expectation of a perfect body. Young men spend the majority of their time on social media and gaming. According to the American Psychiatric Association, a study conducted in 2018 depicted millennials to be the most anxious generation. (APA) Interestingly, one outcome of the study singled out a form of anxiety millennials commonly dealt with, which was the fear of missing out or F.O.M.O. The fear of missing out or F.O.M.O. is defined as “an all-consuming feeling that you’re missing out, that your peers are doing, in the know about, or possession of more or something better than you.”
