Cherry (2018) defines introvert students as those who usually engage with the solidarity activities rather than involving with a large group of people since they are more interested in self-knowledge and self-understanding. The aspects stated hereunder are the common traits of introvert students:
They rather choose enjoying their hobbies like going on a peaceful walk or reading books alone to feel energized.
When in fact, Rampton (2015) clarifies that not all the best leaders and successful profiles are extroverts; proof would be Albert Einstein, one of the most recognized physicists who believed that “The monotony and solitude of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind.”; and Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple who gave some advice in relation to his creative process in his book iWoz; that is, “Work alone. Not on a committee. Not on a team.” which reflects that in doing his stuffs, he prefer doing it alone rather than engaging with a group of people.
Therefore, the process varies but the output could be as successful as the others. As a whole, Dreher (2013) classifies strong points evident in introvert students. Here are just few:
Narrowing it down, Koo (2013) evaluates the school set up in her many years of teaching and there has been a pattern evident in a class of extroverts and introverts. At first, class discussions were dominated by the most extroverted students but after few weeks, when papers have to be written, best submissions mostly came from the students who are quiet during class. Meaning, the student’s personality has something to do with their performance in class. Teachers encourage students to actively participate in class discussions verbally by asking and answering questions to promote learning. And since most people are extroverts, the introverts may not be understood and judged lawfully at this kind of set up. Most especially in the class of oral communication where they are being trained on how to improve their skills to have an effective communication and participate verbally during discussion. Additionally, as an instructor, Koo (2013) believes that they must provide support for introverts and see them as an interested introvert instead of unmotivated student.
Learners could be classified according to their personality as introverts and extroverts and teachers have their primary concern of coming up with a material or strategy without the exclusion of certain learning type. In a school set up nowadays, school day is centered on performance task that are usually by group. And in order to balance both learners, teachers could try coordinating small groups and individual activities. Also, during discussion, introvert students tend to think much longer as they are carefully and deeply thinking about it. In response to this, teachers could exercise patience and give them enough time to think to encourage the logical learning style of students.
