The Importance of the Immigrant Family 

Families migrating into the U.S. should have the full support of the country because immigrants contribute hugely to economic growth. We have seen the president of the United States attack immigrant families as he has expressed anti-immigrant sentiment fueling fear on his Twitter social media account. It is not only unauthorized immigration is under attack, but legal immigration is being threatened. The amount of misinformation against immigrants has increased during the current administration. We have all heard various false claims about immigrants such as immigrants drain government resources; immigrants take American jobs; immigrants bring crime; immigrants’ children should not be citizens, and the U.

S. economy does not need immigrants. On the contrary to those myths, immigrants are very beneficial to our country.

Most economists agree that immigration is good for our economy. The economic evidence is that with the country’s lower birthrates and aging population, that is heading towards retirement, the U.S. economy will suffer if the workforce does not continue to grow.

If we solely rely on native-born workers, our labor force will shrink drastically. Studies have shown that immigrants pay taxes and in actuality, immigrant families help grow our gross domestic product. The GDP is the total value of goods produced and services provided that make the economy grow. Professor of Economics and Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, George J. Borjas, an immigration skeptic, ends through various studies that low-skilled immigration can harm low-skilled natives but have a positive impact on both medium and high-skilled natives.

But the negative effect is only a short-term effect because as the population grows this leads to a demand for more goods which leads to more hiring and ultimately pushes wages to go up.

Not all immigrants that come to this country are low-skilled workers. Many immigrants come to the United States, which are highly educated, highly skilled workers that benefit our country by bringing innovation and ingenuity along with them. The U.S. economy thrives from highly skilled doctors, engineers, and scientists because they have different skillsets and knowledge which they have learned in their countries of origin. Many of these high-skilled immigrants come from economically poor countries where the pay is so low, and so they decide to migrate into the United States for a better economic opportunity., we gain a skillful labor pool that is already educated where we don’t have to wait for several years to educate an individual. These migrants will come and contribute to the U.S. economy.

Those who don’t possess unique job skills or are not educated contribute by doing hard labor jobs. Some work in the agriculture or construction industry. Gardening, housekeeping, caregiving, house building, and agricultural fields have thrived from low-skilled immigrants’ strong work ethic. They are happy to get a job that pays them because most of them didn’t have such opportunities in the countries where they came from. Immigrants don’t just work hard and better their lives. Immigrant families make sure that their children go to school and hope they have a better life. Most immigrants’ kids have taken advantage of the education system we have and are contributing to our economy now as adults. Some children of immigrants have become scientists, innovators, and today’s problem solvers. We don’t lose American jobs because of immigrants, nor does crime rise because we have too many immigrants entering the country. Today, we have a president who has negatively targeted immigrants and their families. We have witnessed families torn apart and tossed into detention centers.

Along with the president, we have a large population in the United States who believe all the negative myths about immigrants such as that immigrants take American jobs; they drain government resources; immigrants bring crime; and that the U.S. economy does not need immigrants. We should be better-informed citizens not be easily influenced by a politician; we should look at the evidence that shows that our country benefits economically when we welcome new immigrants. Immigrants are struggling to gain acceptance among vast amounts of the U.S. population. Most immigrants came to the U.S.to have a better life and have an opportunity for a better education for their children. Almost all immigrants have experienced discrimination in their lives, and even some are still experiencing it today. Most immigrants don’t have a choice but to deal with it when they get discriminated against because many are unaware that they too have rights.

Since the beginning of humanity, humans have always moved around earth in search of a better chance of survival. While our early human family migrated for better weather, fertile land, and prosperous sources of freshwater, today’s migrating human-being is in search of thriving economic weather to better themselves in material respects. We must not forget that the first Europeans who got lost at sea and arrived on the coast of what we today call the Americas are the original immigrants to this land. It was the first nation Native American people like the Wampanoag who helped their fellow man to survive in this land by teaching the new arrivals how to cultivate these lands. It is our duty as human beings to be understanding and compassionate for other people.

Today, there are a few ways we can help support immigrant families. First, we can start by learning more about immigrant communities by reading more about them. Being an informed citizen is our obligation to not be easily fooled by all the misinformation about immigrants and their families. Second, we can speak out against discrimination and family separations that have destroyed our immigrant communities. We as human beings should not allow the physiological abuse that many of the children, that have been separated from their parents, have had to endure. Third, we can give our support and volunteer our time to local organizations who work to give food and shelter, and legal help to immigrant families. Stand with immigrant families because they are human first. As human beings, we all need each other and we will need the immigrant working class to help support us through their tax dollars when we hit old age.
