The Heroes of Our Neighbourhood

Although we may not be able to find Batman guarding our cities at nightfall, we can find many of our own heroes within our neighborhoods. One might say a hero is someone who helps people. That description is true, but it is incomplete. There are many types of heroes, such as fantasy heroes, personal heroes, and community heroes. The qualities of any type of hero include compassion, courage, and inspirational to others. They use either their physical strengths or mental strengths towards their hard work.

A hero can work alone, but also as a team. From the 1930's to the 1950's, the Golden Age of Comics arose and became the peak of superhero popularity. In that era, many of the well-known superhuman characters were born.

Superman is one of the older superhero characters that most people can remember. He was created in 1933 and skyrocketed in popularity. Like many of the comic characters following him, they all possessed a superpower. Some could fly, while others could run at the speed of light.

Some could lift a car with ease, while others could read minds. Each of them had one purpose: to fight evil. To fight evil, you must be dressed for the occasion. Every fictional character had a unique costume. Majority of them had a cape or a mask, and some had a weapon. Once they took care of business, it was time to return to their headquarters. It is enjoyable to read comics about the battles Batman endured, we have seen heroic battles in our personal lives as well.

Most of us grew up in a structure called home, rather than a secret lair. However, heroes can still be found at home. Instead of flying out the door with a cape, our mothers ran out to us with a band aid after we fell off our bikes. Our fathers picked us back up, and told us to try again. They taught us right from wrong. They sacrificed many things to provide for us and protect us.

We went to school, and learned to develop our basic writing and math. We found a mentor to look up to, who showed us opportunities for our future. While they may not have superpowers, they have raised us to be the person we are today. From them we can find unconditional love and endless possibilities. These are the heroes of our personal lives. Members of our family may even be a hero at work helping others.

All throughout our community we can find even more heroes. Some are dressed in casual street clothes, and some wear their hero costume. In the real world, their costume is called a uniform. There are heroes who speed through town in a big red truck, racing towards a burning building. They pull out a massive 50-foot hose, and run into the flames. Some heroes track down criminals and fight crime in the streets. Some heroes provide medicine to heal the sick, and nurture the dying. Some protect our country by flying overseas to fight in war. Whether a hero is a policeman, a firefighter, a nurse, or a soldier, they all risk their lives and devote their careers to help others. They have studied and worked hard to become an expert in what they do.

Every day, we see a hero. Every day, we have firsthand experience in a battle a hero is fighting. Some of us are even learning how to be a hero. The heroes in our life are not thanked enough for the things they do for us. They don't have to save our lives, protect us, or teach us. It is their choice to put us first. We may not realize how hard they are working together to keep us safe and healthy. Who knows where we would be without them in our lives. But at the end of the night, we know there is more to just a hero than the ones we see in books.
