The effects of soda were taking a toll on human health that adult and children were consistently being warned to consume it less with utmost caution where absolute abstinence is unattainable. The makers of soda are profit organizations who have been in business for ages and would want to continue to remain in business. New demands call for more research. Research leads to invention. Invention gives birth to innovation. Not unexpectedly, another type of soda entered the market. It was very popular because it was said to be calorie free.

Diet Coke was first introduced in the United States on August 9, 1982. The new soda is an improved version of the original soda the populace was accustomed to. As an alternative of sugar concentration, new diet Coke is largely made up of artificial sweeteners. The total number of calories in one can of the diet Coke is not up to one. Diet drinks alternatively marketed as sugar-free, zero-calorie or low-calorie are sugar-free, artificially sweetened versions of fizzy beverages with virtually no calories (Siegel 2006).

They are generally marketed toward health-conscious people, diabetics, athletes, and other people who want to lose weight, improve physical fitness, or reduce their sugar intake. However, studies show that the marketed effectiveness of diet soft drinks is questionable (Siegel 2006).

Diet soda is a collection of so many artificial and unhealthy ingredients such as carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, caffeine, aspartame (nutrasweet), potassium benzoate, and citric acid. Over ninety per cent of the diet soda are made from carbonated water.

Carbonated water is artificially produced by pressuring carbon dioxide into water at the bottling plant. Carbonated water is man-made, not naturally occurring. Chemistry processes are used to make carbonated water. Molecular formula for carbonated water is, H2CO3.

All these chemical compounds and processes do have direct effect on human body. Aspartame is an artificial non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar replacement in some food products. Aspartame is a methyl ester of the aspartic acid / phenylalanine dipeptide. It was first made in 1965. At the start, it was approved for use in food products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1981 and first sold under the trade name NutraSweet. Aspartame patent expired in 1992. A committee of experts set up by the European Food Safety Authority concluded in 2013 that aspartame is safe for human consumption at current levels of exposure. As of 2018, evidence does not support a long-term benefit for weight loss or in diabetes because its breakdown products include phenylalanine. People with the genetic condition phenylketonuria (PKU) - a rare inherited disease that prevents phenylalanine from being properly metabolized must be aware of this as an additional source (Gill 2017). The safety of aspartame has been the topic of many medical contention, and Internet hoaxes.

In addition, soda contains phosphoric acid. There have been so many controversies regarding the relationship between phosphorus and calcium. However, a school of thought says: "There is no evidence-based scientific research that has determined that drinking sparkling drinks that contain caffeine and or phosphoric acid will weaken bones or cause osteoporosis. Phosphoric acid is used to give colas their tangy taste, it does not reduce calcium absorption nor does it increase calcium loss." However, the truth is that calcium is the most common mineral in the body and it is primarily found in bones. It is essential for maintaining the bone mass necessary to support the skeleton. (Calvo 2013). The body is also constantly using calcium in muscle and nerve functions as well as to carry out functions in the heart. Most calcium is lost through normal bodily processes in the kidneys and colon, with minor amounts lost through sweat and the shedding of hair, fingernails, and skin therefore if a patient's diet does not include enough calcium to replace what is used, the body will pull from the stored supply of calcium in the bones, thereby weakening them and increasing the risk of fracture (calvo 2013). "Phosphorus helps leech the calcium out of the bone, when it is absorbed very well in the sodas that people drink," said Dr. Loren Wissner Greene of New York University's Langone Medical Center. She also stated that years of drinking too many sodas and taking in too much phosphorus can reduce bone calcium, which is a risk factor for osteoporosis. The darker the soda, such as root beer and colas, the more the phosphorus explained Dr. Greene.

Finally, diet sodas like every other soda sold in the market is detrimental to the body when it becomes an addiction. Quite a number of people thinks that diet soda is a perfect substitute to drinking but of a truth, it is actually worst because most people tend to overindulge. Diet sodas are unhealthy because for them to taste like other regular sodas, a whole lot of artificial sweetener must be added. As stated before, too much diet sodas makes the bones lose calcium which in turn makes bones lose weight. Be careful of diet sodas!
