The artist I picked is Sam Cooke. I found it crazy that as soon as youassigned this project he was the first person who popped into my head then youused him as an example. I choose Sam Cooke because his is one of my favoriteartist and mainly because growing up I heard a lot of his music from my mother atfamily functions or just up early a.m. cleaning.Sam Cooke was born January 22, 1931, American artist, musician, maker,and business person.

Cooke was a noteworthy figure ever of music and, a standoutamongst the most compelling African American vocalists of the post-World War IIperiod. Sam Cooke first got his start in the church and was part of a group calledthe Highway QC’s, but he really wanted to be like a group he looked up to calledthe Soul Stirrers. He ended up getting a shot to be with the Soul Stirrers and hemade the most out of the opportunity and beganned to become very popularamongst the gospel community.

As you stated in class many gospel artist who start in the church end upleaving because there is not any money coming through there, so they branch offand began to sing music that can get them paid. Well Sam also did this, heleft the church and started to sing soul music.Many people call him the father/inventor of soul music, he was also one ofthe first black artist to take care of the business side of the music business, andestablished both a record mark and a distributing organization as an add-on of hisprofessions as a vocalist and writer.

Even though he took on this large task henever forgot to speak about important issues that was going during his time.

Many people do not know that when he dipped into singing popular musiche did not go by his real name, he used the name Dale Cooke and the reason he didthat was so his existing fans and audience would not catch on to him sing the“Devil's music”. That resulted in him getting dropped for the Soul Stirrers and bythat time he was able to use his real name.I believe that his sound was him bringing the spirit of the church music topop, because it is sometimes hard to get away from what you know. So like manypeople tend to intertwine what they know with their new sound to make them feelcomfortable, and for Sam Cooke it turned out to work and also giving him thechance to create a new sound.Sam Cooke started performing in the church then joined a popular group andstarted traveling and performing with them. He performed in Chicago churches andalso on Tonight Shows.
