The holiday of Thanksgiving is a tradition started by the Pilgrims and Indians. Together they shared the fruits of the newly settled America. Thanksgiving Day is a communal celebration marked as a sense of gratitude people feel for all the good things in life. This is done by offering prayers, gifting your near and dear ones. Its origin can be traced back to the 16th century when the first thanksgiving dinner is said to have taken place. Besides, the fourth Thursday in the month of November is marked for the yearly celebration.

Thanksgiving is a time for gifting your family and friends. The day is a time to show your gratitude and respect to your elders, friends, your siblings and also your colleagues. Popular gifts include thanksgiving flowers, jewelry, baked cookie hampers, chocolate gift baskets, candies and wine.

Thanksgiving Day is a family festival celebrated with lot of enthusiasm in US and Canada. Thanksgiving Day Festival commemorates the feast held by the Pilgrim colonists and members of the Wampanoag people at Plymouth in 1621.

On this day people express gratitude to God for his blessings and give thanks to dear ones for their love and support. Feasting with family is an integral and most delightful part of Thanksgiving Day celebrations. Family feast is an important tradition during Thanksgiving. The entire family sits at the table during dinner and offer prayer to the Lord Almighty for his continuous grace. The traditional stuffed turkey adorns every dinner table during the feast.

Pumpkin pie, Cranberry sauce, Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere to mark the day.

Finally, Thanksgiving gives Americans a day to spend time with family and friends. We all reflect, at the magical moment when we first sit down at the holiday table, how God has blessed the United States of America for two hundred and thirty-five years with an overflowing cornucopia, unfettered political and religious freedoms, and economic opportunity. Let us also pause for a moment to pray for and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard our freedoms who protected and defended their country.

Thanksgiving Dinner

I relaxed in the living room of my parent’s two-story colonial home watching the football game and playing games with my siblings, the mouth-watering smell of a homemade Thanksgiving dinner fills the air. Every room in the house was intoxicated with this sensationally delicious Thanksgiving aroma. When dinner is called upon, the shuffling footsteps of my famine family can be heard miles from the house. As we all gather around the long rectangular oak wood table, covered in a crème colored cloth, a sudden warm, content feeling is felt. The lighting was dim, but the presence of each other’s faces light up the dining room.

Once grace is said, the feast finally begins. The great table consists of various dishes; Pollock’s do it big. Not one cubic inch of table was left empty. In the center of the table was what we had been drooling over for the past 4 hours, the turkey. The Juicy, tender, perfectly golden browned skin makes this butterball turkey look picture perfect. It was the size of four footballs, an awfully big, bulky, bird. Surrounding the turkey, like the planets orbiting the sun, are the diverse side dishes. Grandma’s finest crunchy green bean casserole, sweet ‘n’ tangy carrot casserole with a crisp corn flake topping, and a heaping mountain of cheesy, creamy, mashed potatoes. The potatoes, a pale-colored mountain of rich, creamy deliciousness, sit next to a sea of boiling gravy. Lastly was the stuffing, which I am not too fond of. Assorted with various items: soft moist bread, chopped meat, hearty vegetables, and different spices.

The rich savory deserts follow up this delicious dinner. Various chocolate covered fruits, two diverse sweet nesses mixed together, providing your taste buds with a mini shock of sugariness. Hand made from scratch, the sour cream raisin pies are always superior. Thick creamy custard studded with raisins on the inside. Topped with egg whites and brown sugar, beaten together to form a stiff and glossy meringue. Exquisitely garnished with tiny rain droplets of mouthwatering golden honey makes this the perfect last course, along with some coffee, for a scrumptious dinner. However, some feel that the true superstars of the desserts are grandma’s fresh from the oven apple pies. With their thick and crunchy crust guarding the warm syrupy brown sugar, cinnamon spiced apple custard; are sure a good contender.

Even though everyone is stuffed, like the turkey was before this day began, and want to lie down on the couch to enjoy a nice a nap. It wouldn’t be a Thanksgiving dinner without everyone pitching in to help clean up. I normally try to get out of it by staying at the table listening to my grandfather’s old tales of wisdom and witty jokes. Who wouldn’t? Even though they are the same every year, it’s better than trying to clean up the monstrosity that was once a kitchen. Left over food scattered across the counters along with dirty plates laying in places no one knew existed made it look like a Thanksgiving tornado had ripped through.

What was once a peaceful place where all would flock towards was now a disaster zone taped off for quarantine and can only be infiltrated with a biohazard suit on. Thanksgiving dinners are always sure to be memorable, each year just as special as the last. Although the feast was heavenly, it wasn’t merely the food that makes this an unbelievable experience year after year; it was also the family camaraderie. The pure joy of seeing people enjoy themselves, especially loved ones. Eating a delicious meal while spending time with the people you value most, is an experience of a lifetime.
