From Liberation Struggles to the “War on Terror”
Africa has long history of conflicts mostly caused by colonial powers, according to author, Paul Tiyambe, the historical typologies of wars in Africa mostly were five types namely; imperial wars, anti-colonial wars, intra-state wars, inter-state wars and international wars. In addition to this, the current on going what US called “war on terror” has its own negative impact for the African continent because political economy and cultural ecology of war singling out political and structural dynamics of African wars, their economic and social dimensions who put vulnerable position for the green Africa continent.
All above mentions types of wars can be distinguished their underlying features, scales and locations including duration, scope, combatants and military tools and equipment deployed, impression on military and noncombatant populations and significances on politics, economy, society and environmental degradations.
In addition to this, Africa has effected by the current war on terror because it noticeably involves powerful conflicts between and within states, interrelates among the world continents, countries and cultures with has its own faces and impact of each African country differently in terms of political, cultural and societal aspects of live who have remarkable consequence for the long and future dreams of the particular African country.
There’s also point require mentioning here, according to the author for this topic, Mr. Ali Mazru, there are root causes of conflicts of Africa and it started during colonial and post-colonial area because African generally resisted and challenge Europeans strongly and Africans who congenital colonialism has little in governing themselves and this further caused major sources of conflict in postcolonial in Africa continent.
Lately there also specific arguments including religious and ethnicity, resource and identity. Practical examples include the wars among Algeria, Libya and Egypt who was mainly based on religious and ethnicity disagreements and worst outbreak violence of Africa in 1990s took place Rwanda specifically the two mainly occupants of the country Hutu and Tutsi ethnicities.
In conclusion, the question needs to answer is, what will be the future hold for Africa? In reference to some late African head of states like Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Jerry Rawlings of Ghanna, Yakubu Gowon and his successor Murtala Muhhammed of Nigeria, established extraordinary ability to bring about sustainable reconciliations and help the heal of war affected their countries and their unforgettable recommendations provided the whole of Africa was to create tolerance environment towards generating greater stability on African continent and leave behind legacy for the upcoming African generations.`
