Industry Overview

Smart Technology for Engineering Consulting

Using smart systems to perform rule-based and repetitive labor is therefore a natural option foe construction manager. As mentioned previously, today’s smart construction systems incorporate VR, AR, BIM, and the IoT, arguably making the construction second to none among hi-tech industries.

However, obstructions plague smart construction system research and development (R&D). System developers are constrained by practitioners’ reluctance to adopt new technologies on the ground that they are disruptive of prevailing construction processes.

A typical example related to the uptake of BIM-based smart systems. The key to BIM is information and as-built information should be synchronized with a model in real time to support construction decision making.

Hence it comes to the Technology-Acceptance Model (TAM). The goal of the TAM was to improve understanding of user acceptance as well as to provide theoretical guidelines for new technology system development.

In comparison to other industries, construction, including engineering, is regarded as lagging behind in technological development. It is considered to still be waiting for the modernization that has significantly changed other manufacturing industries such as the car industry.

RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification)

In the construction industry, smart systems have been explored widely for their potential in streamlining work procedures, enhancing productivity, improving occupational health and safety (OHS), alleviating adverse environmental impacts, and ultimately, creating value for society. We are trying to implement RFID to detect the exact location of the equipment. It would be promising after learning more about the system. Compared with manual input, the scanned data from RFID could largely reduce human errors, thus increasing job performance and work efficiency. After testing and proposing to different clients, they feel this system help reduce a lot of errors that may occur during manual input. The right number and right code of each piece are very critical to the whole process. After using the system, I find it useful for reducing such errors. Construction industry begins more and more open to smart technology and we are trying to implement this in the hospital.

The RFID technology (Radio Frequency Identification) is used for automated identification of objects. The superiority demonstrated by this technology in relation to other existing identification systems, presents two main characteristics: it has identification fields and does not need a direct view to the object. The passive tags require a transmitter that sends power to them in the form of radio waves and also a device able to read the information and provide the data to a user or to the network. We proposed the application of RFID technology to inventory. At the initial stage of RFID-enabled smart system implementation attitudes toward the system varied significantly from one user to another. The system is compared with manual input, the scanned data from RFID could largely reduce human errors, thus increasing job performance and work efficiency.

BIM (Building Information Modeling)

Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology has been well received by Vancouver construction industry, yet the adoption rate is extremely slow. Many areas of adoption issues and know how regarding the BIM were investigated. However, no prior research has considered the perspective from engineering consulting services (ECS) firms. Therefore, our company is to implement the BIM technology to revolutionize the construction industry. The delivery of a built environment project is beset with problems. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a globally emerging phenomenon that may greatly influence the evolution of the construction industry. BIM is the technological breakthrough that is necessary to modernize construction, bringing with it increases in productivity and value across many stakeholder groups. A successful transition to the adoption of BIM requires a broad spectrum of involvement and investigation from all project participants and it is my job to make this happen.

Table I. Previous studies on adoption on BIM

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an IT enabled approach that involves applying and maintaining an integral digital representation of all building information for different phases of the project lifecycle in the form of a data repository. The building information involved in the BIM approach can include both geometric data as well as non-geometric data. BIM is one of the important areas in current Virtual Reality (VR) research and is expected to envision efficient collaboration, improved data integrity, intelligent documentation, distributed access and retrieval of building data and high-quality outcome through enhanced performance analysis, as well as multidisciplinary planning and coordination.

Increasingly, building information modeling (BIM) has provided a centralized platform for the functioning of smart construction systems. Meanwhile, the Internet of Things (IoT), supported by a profusion of portable device applications along with ubiquitously available networking technologies, had been advocated enthusiastically as a means of achieving improved decision-making responsiveness along the construction values chain, both on- and off-site. While smart construction systems represent a dynamic research area, their adoption by the industry is contentious. The development of smart systems can be traced back to the concept of smart structure, characterized by two basic features that emulate biological functions: sensing external stimuli and responding to these stimuli in real or near real time.

Competitors to this Company

Our main competitor would be other engineering consulting groups. As we bring the different perspective on engineering consulting, clients seek for our solution. They found our approach is more efficient in terms of the workflow and energy conservation.

Regardless of the size of an urbanization, its competitiveness depends on efficient, internal, operational procedures and an inter-organizational choreography of infrastructure needs. Concerning the latter aspect, enterprises and authorities seek to connect in an intelligent manner with all participating units on-site and virtually.

As we look ahead, 5, 10 or even 20 years, there are a number of mega trends that are having an impact on mobility. These include demographic changes such as population growth and urbanization; the proliferation of interconnected systems including smart cities and autonomous cars; and inequality of access including access to mobility both in urban and rural environments.

Company Mandate

Consulting is delivering the best advice at the right time. We use our experience to simplify complexity and reduce risk. We connect people with new ideas and innovations.

An Organization Chart

Position Overview

Title of the position and brief description of my role

The title of my position is Technology Designer. My duties are performing electrical systems design, technology systems design, mixed reality application testing, web software development, and data analysis and scripting. My task is different from day-to-day basis. I got to test the new smart technology such as Hololens, 360° Cameras, and IoT devices. I got to learn how to use BlueBeam and read engineering design drawings.

Description of my responsibilities and how they relate to the company mandate

My responsibility is to test the new technology so that other people in my team can use it on the field. Our goal is to use the newly developed technology in order to improve the system in engineering consulting. This relate to the company because we are trying to use newly developed technology to improve the workflow in engineering consulting.

Discussion on how this position relates to my academic program and future co-op work terms

My position relates to both my interest in the Internet of Things and my degree in Electrical Engineering. For my future co-op work terms, I would love to pursue more into this industry where I have a deep interest in. I would like to apply both my creativity and problem-solving skills to create an impact to the society. My experience here let me apply skills and assist in testing smart technology product. In this job, I learn Office 365 for administrative work and also learned a lot about smart buildings, reading engineering designs, conducting product testing ad how to execute the project.

Recommendations for Future Students

My recommendations for future students are to apply for the job that you are really interested in. I believe no student knows their final goal yet and this is the time for experiment. The co-op program let us get familiarize into different kind of industry that our fields are offering especially for electrical engineering. Electrical engineering is a broad field – design, electrical circuits, electronics, power systems, and etc. It does not mean that when you are interested in some area that means you will like the job. I feel that through coop we can know which kind of industry you want to pursue.
