Since ancient times, all faiths, cultures and societies have aimed to live in harmony, sadly it has not been a successful attempt for every culture in the world. Living in harmony means being able to live in unity and mutual reciprocity, beyond creed, class, gender barriers and religion. It is something we should make part of our life and continue to strive for. The world’s cultures have common features and expressions that shape our actions and lifestyle, they prove that we are more similar than we know it.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines culture as an “customary beliefs, social forms, and characteristics of everyday existence shared by people in a place or time”. Culture is what we learn from our families’ traditions that are learned, the way of life is past down from generation to generation. It is believed that understanding cultural differences can help us to avoid disrespecting other people and their needs, values and attitudes.

However, dwelling too much on how different we are can sometimes cause more harm than good, it can lead one culture to feel superior than another and this can lead to conflict.

This paper highlights structures of the conceptual similarities between cultures and describes these within the context of religious devotion, family structure and health care treatment options.

In her book, “Caring for Patients from different cultures,” Gery-Ann Galanti noted that religious faith is a central part of one’s identity. Religion has always been a major influence in the world, developing cultural values traditionally has been the role of religion in most societies. For many people around the world, religious beliefs are central to their culture and values. We use these beliefs to help guide personal relationships and behavior. A case in point Similarities between Islam and Christianity— they each worship one God but differ in how they worship. The similarities can be attributed to shared histories, values and cultural practices. One of them is the belief about the need to care for other people, their families, and the importance of participating in religious rituals. All three have days that are considered holy and on which certain behavior is strictly prohibited. For instance, one of the most important laws of the Torah states that Jews must observe the Sabbath which begins at sundown on Friday and ends sundown on Saturday.

The Sabbath is time to be with one’s family and to worship God, and working of any kind is prohibited. Judaism also requires its members to fast from sundown to sundown on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. This is like Islam that prohibits eating from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan to detach oneself from material cravings and focus on the importance of spiritual life. It is thought to help the rich empathize with the suffering of the poor.
