Shortening the Study Time Will Allow the Student to Self-Develop

Benet students’ lives are as imbalanced as ever. Having three to four hours of homework every night on top of extracurriculars and trying to maintain a social life is a predicament many Benet students face today. A solution to this problem would be to shorten periods. Yes, students would not be in class as long, and one might logically think that less class time would produce negative outcomes. However, in reality, shortening periods would benefit the students academically, socially, and emotionally.

Contrary to belief, shortened periods would actually benefit students academically. Less time at school with an increase in independent studying would better emulate college life. This would prepare Benet students for college more effectively and allow them to develop better time management skills. Another benefit of more homework and independent studying would be knowledge gained through the studying process. Students that benefit from learning in different ways could utilize their own personal skills of learning to allow for a more efficient process of studying outside of school.

A decrease in time during each period would increase attention during class. Teenagers’ attention spans are decreasing rapidly due to new technology that offers instant gratification. With shortened periods, students would actually understand and absorb more material during class due to an increase in attentiveness. Because students would be more equipped for studying during college, have more time outside of class to do homework and study independently, and be more attentive during class, Benet students would benefit academically with shortened periods.

Shortened periods would also benefit Benet students socially.

Less time in school would allow students to be more involved with extracurriculars and service projects. These activities would help the students learn valuable lessons about the importance of teamwork, leadership, and helping others. Also, more time to do extracurriculars could help strengthen college résumés. Colleges tend to pursue students with good academics as well as involvement in different activities, and shortening periods would allow for a greater variety of extracurriculars. Students could also spend more time hanging out with their friends which would lead to a better balance between their academic and social lives. Benet should strive to improve the balance of their students’ lives by making an actual change; this change would allow students to be more involved in school activities, strengthen their college résumés, and spend more time doing things they want to do.

Shortened periods would benefit the emotional state of Benet students. The Benet curriculum is very rigorous, but by implementing shortened periods, Benet can keep its academic rigor while also improving the well-being of its students. Having an extra hour at the end of the day would greatly decrease school-related stress, taking pressure off of the students’ backs. With homework, sports, clubs, and other activities, it is very hard for students to maintain a good state of mental health. Shortening periods would decrease the intensity of this stress and help improve mental health. Having an extra hour at the end of the day would also allow students to get more sleep.

Sleep deprivation is becoming a large problem for teenagers across the United States, and its effects can be costly. Jolanta Orzel-Gryglewska, a researcher and writer for the International Journal of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, writes: “In the course of prolonged wakefulness, the concentration of attention becomes impaired, the thoughts are distracted, and micro episodes of sleep are longer. Such effects lead to decreased accuracy and effectiveness of work performed as well as impaired cognitive processing” (“Consequences of Sleep Deprivation”). Sleep deprivation has very apparent effects on students’ performance in the classroom, but with shortened periods, students would be able to do better in the classroom while maintaining a healthy emotional state. Because school-related stress would decrease, mental health would improve, and more time to sleep would be available, Benet should shorten periods.

It is absolutely necessary to keep a good balance in one’s life in order to maintain good mental health. If periods were shortened, students would not only have a more balanced lifestyle, but also would benefit academically, socially, and emotionally. With this change, Benet would give its students a better opportunity to succeed during high school as well as beyond.
