Role of Dreams in "Wizard of Oz"

Categories: Wizard Of Oz

Dreams have fascinated people from all over the world for many years! “Dreams are a sequence of images, emotions, and thoughts passing through a sleeping person’s mind” (Myers). They can occur anytime during sleep. Although the most vivid dreams occur during deep sleep and REM sleep, when a person’s brain is most active. The average person tends to have at least 5 to 6 dreams per night while in REM sleep. Even though everyone dreams during sleep, that does not mean everyone remembers.

Scientist aren’t quite sure why some people remember more than others, Myers seems to believe that you remember dreams that have meaning to you in some type of way, meaning either Family, Fear (death), and/or Sex.

The Interpretation of Dreams, by Sigmund Freud, suggest that your dreams are related to wish fulfilling things. Freud states that “A dream can reveal a person’s deepest wish and unconscious desires.” He goes on by saying “Many people repress painful memories deep into their unconscious mind and couldn’t [can’t} be accessed when conscious” He believed that the dreams you dreamed had at least one of the four, Birth, Death, Family, and/or sex! Meaning that only your dreams can truly reveal hidden memories, desires and/or experiences that have been repressed.

The Wizard of Oz is one of the most well-known movies from the 1900’s. “I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!” is by far the most famous quotes from The Wizard of Oz. I recently watched the movie for fun and shortly realized there are some very interesting details hidden in the film. When the movie first starts Dorothy is bored by her life on the farm, and she lives in a world literally without color. Longing for a more exciting life, Dorothy sings the song 'Over the Rainbow' about her dream of going somewhere more exciting than Kansas. The most fascinating part to me is that everything in her dream symbolizes something going on in her life.

Wicked Witch of the West is the villain of the film, but she also comes to represent Dorothy and the other characters' deepest fears. She is a symbol of shadow for the rest of the brightly colored Oz. Her house was a hard one for me to understand she battled going back and forth throughout the film, At the start, Dorothy feels trapped in her home in Kansas but by the end she has the desire to come back home so she can appreciate the one she already has. The Scarecrow constantly mentions his lack of brains yet proves to be the intelligent leader when it comes to planning and strategizing. The Tin Man cries frequently and clearly has the capacity to feel great emotion, in spite of his desire for a heart. The Lion shows he has access to a well of bravery and courage, and yet feels that he lacks these things.
