Racism In A Raisin In The Sun and Fight For Racial Equality

The two main themes of A Raisin in the Sun are, to recognise the value of your dreams and to pursue what you believe in. As well as be determined to fight for racial equality and go against discrimination. According to the first theme, A Raisin in the Sun is mainly about the characters dreams, and them having to make the decision of whether or not to follow them.

The main characters kind of struggle to hold on to each other after they get the check.

This is because they each have something different they want to use the money for, which divides them intensely. To add to their pressure they are a family of color in America. Every individual from the Younger family has a different dream they want to pursue, Beneatha wants to go to college to become a doctor and Walter needs to have cash so he can manage the cost of things for his family. The family struggles to stay afloat and corporate as the play progresses, the characters seem to progress with it although in the sense of progressing into madness and selfishness.

Everyone wants to use the money for their own gain, almost none of them take a step back to look and see how their dreams will inflict others dreams. This goes with the theme because it proves that you need to know whether or not to pursue your dreams. While it is important to have dreams, it's also important to not have your dreams revolve around you.

This is the main source of conflict in this book and is what leads the family to divide. This point is very important to the plot and theme, because Before the finish of the play, they discover that the dream that is most important is the family's dream of a nice house, due to the fact that it includes everyone.

To support The second theme which is to be determined to fight for racial equality and go against discrimination. Mr. Lindner, who is the real estate agent who showed the family the house advised them not to move in. This is because the Clybourne Park neighborhood they wanted to move into was an all white neighborhood. It would have been terrible for them to have to deal with the constant racial injustice discrimination. It could have even been dangerous for them to live there. Mr. Linder was sent by the Clybourne Park neighborhood Association, the reason they sent him was due to the color of the family's skin. The play intensely exhibits that the best approach to manage separation is to confront it and reassert one's pride. This was a very prominent and obvious action that was fueled by racism in A Raisin In The Sun . Since the family decided not to live in the house guarded by the Clybourne Park neighborhood Association this took a huge toll on the families pride.

Eventually, the Youngers react to this, and it fueled the family members to go after each of their dreams, each wanting the money for themselves. The grandma of the family decided that she wanted the money to go to Beneatha for her college education. But Walter had other ideas, he wanted to use the money for his new business which was to be a liquor store. Though no one agreed to give him the money. He decided to use the money for his own gain and put it towards his business. He Gave the money to his friend/partner who was working with him to open up the business. But comes back to find that he had run away with the money, leaving him with nothing. This proves the theme of deciding whether or not it's okay to follow certain dreams, because if you follow your dreams dishonestly, it will almost never work out.
