Mentor is a character in Homer's epic poem The Odyssey. He is an old friend of Odysseus and is tasked with guiding and advising Telemachus, Odysseus's son, in his father's absence. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, often takes on the guise of Mentor to assist Telemachus on his journey to find news of his father. The name "Mentor" has come to represent a trusted advisor or wise counselor.
