When Was The Handmaid's Tale Written?

The Handmaid's Tale was written in 1985 by Margaret Atwood.

The story is set in a near-future society that has been taken over by a fundamentalist religious dictatorship named Gilead. In Gilead, women are stripped of all rights and are forced to become reproductive slaves known as "handmaids." The narrator of the story, Offred (her name is not revealed until later in the book), is one such handmaid.
