The theme of The Great Gatsby is the pursuit of happiness.
In the novel, Jay Gatsby is a man who has everything he wants and more, but he still doesn't feel happy. He feels that he's missing something in his life, and he spends years trying to find it by throwing extravagant parties and courting Daisy Buchanan, who he believes will make him truly happy.
The story ends with Gatsby's death, which is symbolic of the end of his pursuit for happiness. He never finds what he's looking for—and neither do any of the other characters in the novel—but they keep looking nonetheless.
