How Does Great Gatsby End?

The Great Gatsby ends with a quote from the eponymous character, who says: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

The narrator says that this is one of the most famous lines in American literature, and he explains that it means that Gatsby's dream of recapturing his past life with Daisy was impossible, because "the past is always moving away from us."
