Janie, the protagonist of Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God," has unique and complex interactions with the women she meets in the Everglades. As she navigates this new environment, she gradually discovers a sense of belonging and female community that was absent in her previous experiences. At the beginning of the novel, Janie is a young, attractive woman living with her grandmother in Eatonville, a small all-black town in Florida. It's immediately apparent that Janie feels isolated and disconnected from the other townspeople, especially the women. Her grandmother has a particular vision of what Janie's life should look like, and this stifles Janie's potential for authentic relationships.
