In William Golding's novel "Lord of the Flies," the boys are eventually rescued from the island by a naval officer. The officer arrives just as the boys are in the midst of a violent confrontation between Ralph and Jack's factions, and his appearance abruptly ends the conflict. The boys are initially elated to be rescued, but as they reflect on their experiences on the island, they realize the darkness that had consumed them. The novel ends with Ralph crying over the loss of innocence and the realization that human nature is not inherently good. The rescue serves as a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness, but it does not erase the trauma and violence that the boys have experienced.
