Before I started working in this company I had a practical training there for almost 2 months, since I had no previous experience or education in the field of logistics.
At first I did the most basic office work, for example, printing documents, e-mail sending, answering phone calls, preparing documents. Later, I began to work more directly with customers and customs documentation. At first it was challenging because I needed to know a lot of details, terminology, rules and regulations. I was afraid to make a mistakes, because every mistake in logistics can be very expensive both for our customers and for our company. So I tried to check everything several times, fortunately, my colleagues from other offices were always in touch with me and ready to help me if I needed (I worked alone in the office in Kotka).
As I gained experience, work tasks became more complex and interesting: arranging ocean freights/ container deliveries, import-export, re-export of goods, arranging rail and truck transportation, complicated cargo deliveries, compilation of optimal routes for the movement of goods, customer support, working with client bases, study of warehousing programs, basic accounting and billing, cooperation with customs, inspection and licensing authorities.
According to experienced employees, logistics should be sociable, active, observant and resistant to stress. Ability to analyze information and remember large amounts of data is welcome. I improved many my skills doing this job, for instance, my communication and interpersonal skills, as I had to communicate a lot with different people, such as truck drivers, customs officers, suppliers, our clients and partners in Finland and abroad. I also developed such my skill as multitasking. Since I worked alone, sometimes I had to do several different things at the same time. Problem solving and forward thinking skills were also very important in this job. Sometimes it was necessary to solve completely different problems efficiently and quickly since time plays a very important role in logistics. Being a good team player is understanding that the success of every step of the supply chain is a group effort. Ability to work under pressure is also one of the skills I improved. Learning constantly is also very important, because rules and regulations and many other aspects can change quite quickly. Flexibility helps to manage all the unexpected things that periodically appear in the working process. As Heraclitus said: "The only thing that is constant is change", therefore, you always need to be prepared for this working in logistics. Doing this job I got basic understanding about logistics in general and practical experience as well.
Logistics is an integral part of modern business. Understanding logistics processes and supply chains, not just the business or marketing itself, provides a competitive advantage in the work. This gives a more complete picture and understanding of all business processes. This allows me to think more broadly and unconventionally in order to solve problems. And allows to look at the task from different angles. In fact, in modern trade, you need to have a lot of knowledge and use it wisely: study demand, build a logistics system, develop a marketing strategy, and so on. Without this knowledge, it is impossible to effectively manage trading processes. Having experience in logistics also gives you more choices when looking for a job. This experience also provides ability to work with tasks for various business sectors.
It is quite difficult to adequately evaluate myself from the outside. As far as I can see I did my best to perform this job well. Naturally, there were some mistakes, but this is an integral part of the process of learning something new. Naturally, at the very beginning of this work, I felt insecure due to the lack of the necessary experience and skills. But thanks to my ability to learn quickly, I acquired the necessary base for work quite fast. If there were any problems or unexpected things, I tried to solve them myself as much as possible and only when I did not know what to do, I turned to my colleagues or superiors for help. But also I think it would be good to pay more attention to theoretical knowledge. For example, read thematic sites and learn more relevant information, because different areas of logistics require specific knowledge and skills.
Communication skills: I think there is always room for improvement. Since all people are different and working with people you need to be able to find an approach to them. And this skill is necessary and applicable to almost every kind of job.
Presentation skills: I know that this is one of my weakest skills. Due to the fact that I do not really like presenting, I do not seek to improve this skill. Although I understand that it can be quite important in the work.
Attention to details: Sometimes, especially when you have a lot of work, it is difficult to concentrate on the details. Nevertheless, the correctness of filling out the documents, the ability to provide relevant information to the clients etc depends on this skill.
Good writing skills: since in this work it is necessary to communicate a lot through email, the ability to write competent business letters is very important.
