The kind of society that we live in every other person, diplomat and country preaches about human rights, equality, unity and social justice among people and states but still we witness and go through numerous headlines and articles almost every day which talks about racism, communal attacks, sexism, terrorism, police brutality etc. We aren’t yet done solving, accepting and getting over with issues like such and the bitter truth is that the surely exist even after we have made several achievements in the field of art, science and so on.

In my essay I shall be focusing on the topic of Racial discrimination and Police Brutality especially in the states which involves mass destruction and the Black Lives Matter Protests as well.

Black Lives Matter is an organization, decentralized political and social movement which focused on advocating for non-violent civil disobedience, protesting for matters related to human rights like racism against black people, violence against black people and police brutality against them.

These movements impacted the African American society to bring about unity, equality and integrity among several races, diminish racial hatred, prejudices and also police brutality. It was established in 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi and the movement took a start after the demise of a 17-year old guy that is Trayvon Marton who was stereotyped and murdered just because he was carrying a bag of skittles and was passing by during winter night while wearing a black hoodie.

BLM came to be recognized due to a specific event around May 2020 where for 8 minutes and 46 seconds straight, Derek Chauvin a police officer pressed his knee into the neck of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man.

This deadly use of force by the now-former Minneapolis police officer has reinvigorated a very public debate about police brutality and racism. As protests have spread around the globe, the pressure is on police departments and politicians, particularly in the United States, to do something — from reforming law-enforcement tactics to defunding or even abolishing police departments. This incident of violence had led people furious, outraged at the injustice of racism that continues to be persuasive in several countries around the world but specifically America as this incident took place there. inter-generational suffering that has resulted from the racial injustice perpetrated through centuries, particularly against people of African descent. To merely condemn expressions and acts of racism is not enough.

The shocking killing of George Floyd is rooted in a wider and intractable set of issues that will not disappear if we ignore them. It is time for the United Nations to step up and act decisively to help end systemic racism against people of African descent and other minority groups “in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion” as stipulated in Article 1 of the UN Charter. Indeed, the foundation of the United Nations is the conviction that all human beings are equal and entitled to live without fear of persecution. It was at the height of the civil rights movement in the United States and during the emergence of post-colonial independent African nations joining the United Nations, that the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) came into force in 1969.

Government officials, academic researchers and media outlets launched data-collection projects around that time to better understand the frequency of police violence and the risk factors that contribute to it. From these growing data sets come some disturbing findings. About 1,000 civilians are killed each year by law-enforcement officers in the United States. By one estimate, Black men are 2.5 times more likely than white men to be killed by police during their lifetime. And in another study, Black people who were fatally shot by police seemed to be twice as likely as white people to be unarmed.

United Nations being such a powerful organization addresses the dignity and human rights of black people in Africa and black people in general. UNO recognizes the issues of racial discrimination and doesn’t tolerate injustice bigotry under the cover of unjust laws. The initiative taken by the Secretary General of UNI ids appreciable over strengthening global racism discourse which would also include and discuss systemic racism all around and it would make an impact on each and every part of the world.

Africa would play a definite role when it comes to achieving peace and development in the field of sustainability and that is exactly what the black prominent leaders and speakers wished for like Cheikh Anta Diop, Kwame Nkrumah and also Nelson Mandela who quoted that, “To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.” Being a human and having a sense of humanity by default, we must go beyond and do more as much as possible so that we can to avoid and overcome such evils that exists in our society.
