Physical Preparation, Health And Lifestyle

In this task I will be writing about fitness test that a can be found in the fire service, police and Royal Marines and I will be comparing my fitness levels to their test and the national average.

Components of fitness

  • Strength is the ability to carry out a form of work against resistance. In the Uniformed Public services this would be used to lift and carry heavy items e. g. carrying a gear bag around all day like in the army and marines.

A test for this would be the 1 min push up test.

  • Cardiovascular endurance is the ability for oxygen to be delivered around the body to your muscles by the heart, lungs and blood vessels. A test for this would be the bleep test.
  • Endurance is the ability to exercise continuously for long periods of time without tiring, for example in the army when soldiers can’t use vehicles they must travel over a long distance of land on foot.

A test for this would be the 20m shuttle run test.

  • Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle can produce with maximum. Effort. This can be test with the 1 min push up test.
  • Flexibility is the stretching of muscles in a range of effective motions. A good test to test this is with the sit and reach test.
  • Speed is the ability to move body parts quickly, for example in the Uniformed public services this would be seen during training and in the field when moving to one location to the other quickly.

  • Reaction Time is the time taken to start a form of movement e. g. in the Uniformed public services the expected reaction time that is needed would help a person swim faster, move quicker and process senses quicker.
  • Agility is the ability to change the overall position of your body quickly under control. This can be seen in the Uniformed Public services when solders are on the field and they must change direction quickly due to gun fire in their direction or when running away from explosions.
  • Coordination is the ability to move body parts fluently at the same time. In the Uniformed Public services this can be seen when exercising or when balancing on an object. The Police force is a civil force organisation, which is used by the government to keep order, detect crime and enforce laws set by the government to keep citizens safe.

Furthermore, when you go through training the police force or in the police force they expect you to keep fit and stay healthy, which is monitored by fitness tests. One of the test they do is known as the 15-meter shuttle run (also known as the bleep test). The bleep test is a timed test where you run at an increasing speed every time the there’s a beep, over time the beeps will become closer to gather so the officer would have increase their speed to make it to the lines which are 20 meters apart. The bleep test focuses on speed, agility, muscular endurance and the cardiovascular system and the officer’s physical fitness. This test is conducted, because when they are on duty they might have to chase a criminal down on the streets and if they didn’t do well on that test then the person signing up for the job wouldn’t get the job unless they improve and retake the test.

For the bleep test/ 15- meter shuttle run an officer would need to get a score of 5: 4 or higher to pass the test, but an officer should never reach the score required as they should be aiming higher to have a better chance of getting the job/ role they want. Furthermore, the national average for this test at 20 meters is level 7-9 but >13 is excellent so an officer should be aiming for at least level 7-9 or >13. The national average which for the 20-meter shuttle run (level 7-9 and higher) compared to my score for test is better as I only achieved level 6. 5 which is good enough to become a police officer but, also worst then the national average. To improve my score, I can train harder and do this test in my personal time to improve my Cardiovascular endurance. Another, the police force conduct is the Chester Treadmill Police Test (CTPWT) to check the officers aerobic fitness; this was developed as an alternative to the 15-meter shuttle run in the United Kingdom for places like England and Wales to help the people that are unable to complete the test due to medical conditions or disabilities.

The CTPWT is based on treadmill

During the test every 2mins the gradient of the treadmill is raised until the officer has got the minimum record is reached which is 8 minutes unless there going for a better role within the forces then 10 minutes is allowed. This test would be conduct for the same reason as the bleep test first of all it would give the officers a goal to complete and secondly it would let the officer know how fit they so when they go on the filed they are able to run after criminals that are lighter on their feet as they wouldn’t have a lot of gear on them unlike the police.

The Fire service is another organization owned by the government but this time they are responsible for preventing and fighting fires. The fire service also conducts fitness tests some of them are like the polices tests, but they are abit different. One of the first test conduct is the test the sprint test. This tests the fire fighter’s anaerobic fitness and their Cardiovascular endurance. In this test the fire fighter would have to do a 15-mint warm up then sprint measure out 35 meters and sprint towards it as fast as they can go. The timing they should be aiming for is less than 4. 8 seconds which is classed as excellent however the average is around 5. 6 – 6 seconds. This test would be conducted as if the fire alarm went off then they would need to run towards the gear area put on the gear and get to the truck as quickly as they can. For strength and flexibility, they conduct the ladder climb. The test requires the candidates to wear their PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and then prcFinally, the Royal Marines is a light infantry and one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy. Continuing, the Royal Marines conducts fitness test just like the police force and fire fighters however its more intense, for instance the running test.

The running test is a two-part test that’s test your speed, aerobic fitness. Like the police force and the fire services the Royal marines conduct a version of the shuttle run test which is just like the Police forces one. Furthermore, the Marines also test their strength, speed and overall finesses through the gym test which includes them to do a satisfactory number of 40 press ups, 12 pull ups and 70 sit ups. They also make you jump of a 3m board, retrieve a brick from the bottom of a pool and swim 80 meters. During all those tests they test for the marine fitness levels as the swimming test will help them improve their overall fitness levels to the standers requirements. The reason why the requirements and training for the Royal Marines is more intense is because fitness levels are realy important in the Marines as the job is realy intense due to the nature of the job itself which does require intense fitness to join.
