Trees occupy an important place in the life of man. The trees provide us flowers, fruits, fodder for animals, wood for fire and furniture and provide cool shadow from scorching sun. They give us so many such good things and yet expect nothing in return. Trees give us fruits for food and flowers for pleasure. They provide us timber (wood) for building our houses and making furniture. They provide us wood for fuel. They supply sleepers for the railway line. Many trees provide us medicinal products such as quinine and eucalyptus.

In fact, most of the medicines that we use ultimately come to us through trees and vegetation. Trees play an important role in purifying the air around us. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen that sustains our life. Thus they make this world a better place to live in. Trees are also very necessary for having good rainfall. The trees attract rain bearing clouds and prevent soil erosion and conserve the earth.

Our Government also realised the importance of trees. The 'Chipko Andolans' and "Van Mahotsava' made us all aware of the importance of trees."One tree by one man" scheme by Vinobha Bhave also helped the cause. Even science has proved that trees are as necessary to our atmosphere as our food for life. Trees are our best friends. They play a very important role in our life. We can not live without them. They give us timber, paper and firewood. Timber is used in making houses, train compartments, big boxes, tools etc.

Without paper life may be difficult for us. Paper is necessary for study and writing. People in villages use firewood to cook meals. They use wood to build houses, huts, carts and agriculture tools.

Trees also give us food, gum and medicine. They also add to the beauty of life. Gardens can not be charming without them. We need them for oxygen and good health. Trees also help to control pollution: They absorb carbon dioxide. They improve our environment. They cause rainfall and protect water resources under the ground. They prevent floods and droughts. Therefore, we should try our best to grow more trees. Govt. and social welfare societies should start a movement. There should be awards for those persons who grow more trees. Trees are of tremendous value to us. They give us fruits, wood, herbs and many things of commercial value. They are home to numerous birds, insects and animals. They provide shade to men and animals. They prevent drought and cause rainfall. They help in checking environmental pollution. They give us oxygen to breathe in and absorb the carbon dioxide. So, we should promote forestation. Wood is the most valuable product that trees give us. We use wood in many ways. Wood is used as fuel and firewood. Wood is used to make furniture. Wood is also used to lay the tracks of the railways. Trees are good sources of medicinal herbs, lace and raw materials for many industries. We get resins, natural gums, etc. from the trees. The bamboo is an important variety of tree which grows in abundance. It is of great commercial value. It is found everywhere. It is used as building material for making temporary shed. It is an important source of shelter for the poor and economically weaker people.

Bamboo is used for making mats, fence, basket and various items of handicrafts. Bamboo is used as raw material for making paper. Cane is another variety of tree which is used for many purposes. Mats, ropes and furniture are made from cane. Furniture made of cane is highly artistic, beautiful and costly. Lac is one of the most valuable forest products of India. It is used for making bangles and other useful items. We get honey from bees. Though honey is produced by bees, bees thrive on trees. Trees serve as fodder to different animals. Many insects, birds and animals live on trees. Babul, Dhaora, Salat, Kulu and Bigasal are some varieties of trees which yield gum. Gum is used in different ways and is also exported to different countries. It is a good source of foreign exchange. We get turpentine from pine trees. It is used in paint and varnish industry.

The kendu leaves are used for biri making. It provides employment to many people particularly in rural areas. Besides, they are good source of revenue for the state governments. Trees help in maintaining the fertility of soil. They check soil erosion. They help in drought and flood control. Trees cause rainfall. They maintain ecological balance. They help in cleaning environment. They are good source of fresh air. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. We get oxygen from the trees and they absorb the carbon dioxide that we exhale. Trees add to the natural beauty. Unfortunately, trees are being cut indiscriminately. Rapid industrialization, urbanization and population growth have contributed to the loss of trees. In this way we have done great loss to ourselves. It is the crying need of the hour to plant more and more trees. Trees are valuable natural resource. We should conserve them. We should promote afforestation. This is good for larger benefit of society.

Introduction

Trees are important to humankind not only economically, environmentally and industrially,but also spiritually, historically and aesthetically, for they sustain human life through direct and indirect gains by providing a wide range of products for survival and prosperity. However, it is not always easy to define “tree.” A tree is a large, long-lived (i.e., perennial) woody plant that attains a height of at least 6 m (20 ft) at maturity in a given locality and usually—but not always—has a single main self-supporting stem called a “trunk” or a “bole,” which gives off spreading branches, twigs and foliage to make a crown (Venkatesh, 1976; Panshin & de Zeeuw,1980; Hawkins, 1986).

Since the diameter at breast height (dbh) of trees is determined internationally at 1.35 m (4.5 ft) above the ground, a tree must be unbranched—i.e., with a single trunk—at least up to 1.5 m (5 ft) from the ground. But this definition does not cover the following (Venkatesh, 1976), which are also considered trees: • Palms are typically unbranched trees with only one trunk (columnar stem), called the “caudex,” which ends in a crown of large leaves. • Bamboos are trees without a main trunk but with a cluster of culms arising from the underground rhizome. These culms are unbranched, with distinct nodes and internodes that give them a jointed appearance.

That's why people prefer to spend their life in regions which are away from concrete jungle of cities Like New York, New Delhi, Tokyo, Mumbai, London, Cairo and all other big cities. Deforestation is normal these days, this is creating a lot of problems. Some of the hazards from deforestation are as follow:

1) Soil Erosion: The trees help in keeping the soil intact with their roots but when there is lot of cutting of trees, the soil is washed away with water during the rains. And during floods the it creates havoc. Due to soil erosion the water level also falls down.
2) Pollution: Trees help in controlling the pollution in the air and if their are no trees, we have to face more air pollution.
3) Lack of Pure Oxygen
4) Environmental Imbalance
5) Imbalance in the Food Chain of the Ecosystem.
6) Global Warming is becoming a major problem these days due to this. Due to this Glaciers are melting and the Sea Level is rising day by day. This is indirectly creating lot of environmental problems.

Notwithstanding the debt we owe to trees, its emotive power, and its importance to other forms of life, the forested area of the earth is steadily being depleted.

This in turn is leading to the degradation of the environment and the extinction of many species. A real danger cropping up is that in the near future man will destroy a large proportion of the present population of other species on earth, creating an uninhabitable environment, and then will die out himself.
