The day I went hunting with my dad and got my first buck was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. My dad was an excellent hunter and marksman. Hunting was something he loved doing with his free time. I wanted to become a skilled hunter like my dad, but most of all I wanted to make him proud.
The memories I have of bonding with my father on hunting trips and the time I got my first deer were a big part of my development into a man.
One morning in November of 1998 I woke up at 3 a. m. to get ready for a hunting trip with my dad that I had been looking forward to for weeks. After we got ready and loaded the truck, we headed to Hardee’s to meet the other members of the hunting club for breakfast. When we finished eating, we walked to our trucks to talk about where we were going and where the dogs would be released.
Once a plan of action was established dad and I headed to the place where he had a tree stand set up.
When we arrived at our destination, I could see there was a cornfield on one side of the road and woods on the other. As we were getting out of the truck my dad said, 'I want you to go out into the cornfield. Here, take this walkie-talkie and I will let you know what's going on.' I took my gun and my walkie-talkie to a little patch of brush near a telephone pole in the middle of the cornfield.
About that time my dad said on the walkie-talkie, “The dogs are getting closer. Stay low and keep quiet.” I said 'Yes sir, I am. Do you want me to come closer or stay put?” He said, 'No! Stay where you are!' A few minutes had passed when three deer ran across the cornfield about a hundred yards from where I was standing, headed straight towards my dad. I said to my dad, 'You've got three-headed your way!'
And he said 'Which way are they coming?' I said 'Look behind you dad!' A couple of seconds later I heard a gunshot coming from his direction. Then I heard my dad say, 'I got one! Get over here!' I immediately went over to where he was to see what had happened. But when I approached, he gave me the hand signal to keep quiet and pointed at the deer on the ground in front of him. As we approached the deer it looked as if it was unconscious, but there was no blood anywhere in sight. My dad said 'Get ready!' My adrenaline instantly began pumping and my heart started racing. I lifted my gun about waist-high and I told him I was ready. He hit the deer with the butt of his gun which caused it to jump up and run right out in front of me. I pulled the trigger as soon as it crossed the barrel of the shotgun.
The deer dropped not even five feet away from where we were standing. My dad looked at me with such a proud look on his face and said, 'Good job son. That was a great shot!' When we got a closer look at the deer, we noticed the shot I fired went through its heart and the left antler had been blown off by the shot my dad fired. Because of the missing antler, the deer would have only been considered a four points buck. Later on, dad promised me he would come back in the spring to see if he could find the missing antler.
The following spring, he went back to look for the antler and found it! At that point, the deer has considered it was an eight-point buck. I was so excited and thankful that he actually took the time to go back and find the missing antler for me. It made me feel like he truly cared and wanted to keep his promise. This experience was something my dad and I still talk about to this day. I think it's ironic that something as simple as a hunting trip could bring a boy into manhood and strengthen the bond with his father. I never imagined that morning I woke up to go on that hunting trip with my dad that I would actually get an eight-point buck. The memories of that day will stay with me forever.
