Mahesh Bhatt’ Arth – a Great Story Of Relationships And Self-Realisations

Mahesh Bhatt’ Arth was one of the finest movies of 1980s portraying the problems women faced during that period. It covers the story of men carrying extra marital affairs and divorces with their lead roles and domestic violence and other relevant issues with their minor characters.

The plot begins with Pooja waiting for Inder, her husband, overnight to return home. Whilst he goes for a late night party without informing her. After loosing his current job and house, he starts working as a film director with his friend Harish.

Shifting into a new house, Pooja hires a maid, Rohini, who had a daughter and an alcoholic husband who used to physically abuse her. Rohini’s husband continued infidelity even though she knew about it. When Pooja acknowledges about her maid’s situation she shows her resentment by suggesting her to get separated.

The movie takes a twist when it depicts Inder was cheating on Pooja with an actress named Kavita while he was out for a film shoot.

Then after Pooja discovers her husband’s mistress she is heartbroken. Even after such mishap in her she remains optimistic regarding life. As soon as she gets to know that every asset she owns is from Kavita’s earning, she leaves everything out of self-respect and embarks to discover her true identity.

Arth particularly inspires women to fight for their rights and instead of feeling helpless in such situations, they should lead their own life and become independent. Pooja, the protagonist, is an exemplary character played by Shabana Azmi.

This classic is a fascinating story of relationships and self-realisations. The difficulties faced by women during that period are still present in every section of the society, where women are still fighting for their rights. Therefore, storyline depicted is so realistic and becomes enhanced with the amazing acting skills of the cast. I would recommend this to each and every women, so they can get inspired for the betterment of their own.
