Live Your Day Like It's Your Last

There’s this constant debate between which is better: living every day like it’s your last or living every day like it’s your first.

Well, I’m here to end this ridiculous argument once and for all by saying that it really doesn’t matter. To some people, the reminder that we all have an expiration date can be motivating but to others, it can result in crippling depression and extreme uncertainty. So, really, it depends on the individual.

Case closed.

However, regardless of which motto appeals to you more, it’s important to remember that we shouldn’t take these sayings too literally. I mean, if you really lived like it was your last day on earth, wouldn’t you choose to do really irresponsible things that you normally wouldn’t do on a regular basis like maybe break a couple of laws or scale some really tall building? On the other hand, if you really lived like it was your first day alive, there wouldn’t be any form of urgency to get anything done because you’d be too busy marvelling at all the wonders of a world that you’ve suddenly been plonked into.

Neither are remotely ideal.

But, in my opinion, the equally-cryptic gist of both expressions, which is to live life to the fullest, is a far better mantra to live by.

Steve Jobs once said that, “Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” And I feel like this is a very good and much-needed reminder to everyone that life is short and, because it’s so short, you cannot waste all that time listening to what other people think and say or being pushed over by bullies who want to overpower you.

You have to stand up for yourself because if you don’t, no one else will and our time on this earth is far too short to be spent being someone else’s lackey.

In order to truly make the most out of life, it’s important to find your passion. Without it, there’s no fire and therefore, you’d feel like your life is a complete drag because you just don’t have the drive or the motivation to achieve anything. Quoting Steve Jobs once again, “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.” It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the wave of opinions and noise that constantly pull you under but to keep afloat, remember that only you know yourself best.

We all have a comfort zone and somedays, it’s okay to only want to do things you feel comfortable doing. However, staying within that area your entire life is the exact opposite of living life to the fullest. Go out, do something you normally wouldn’t do. Venturing outside your comfort zone is the only way you can ever reach your fullest potential and make your life worthwhile.

And, above all, as cliche as it sounds, appreciate everything and everyone around you. Be nice, be kind, be positive. Every cloud has a silver lining. Nature is beautiful. Insert any other positive quote floating around the internet because seeing the good in life is undoubtedly the key to a good life.
