The book is set in England in 1666, during the time of the bubonic plague. Anna Frith is a young woman who lives in the village of Eyam. When the plague comes to the village, Anna’s husband, Elinor, dies from the disease. Anna is left to care for her two children, George and Martha.
As the plague ravages the village, Anna turns to her friend, Michael Mompellion, the local vicar, for guidance and support. Mompellion preaches that the plague is a punishment from God and that the villagers must repent for their sins. He also urges the villagers to quarantine themselves in order to prevent the disease from spreading.
Despite the quarantine, the plague continues to claim lives. As the death toll rises, Anna begins to question Mompellion’s beliefs. She also starts to feel attracted to Mompellion, which creates a rift between her and her best friend, Susanna.
As the plague takes its toll, the villagers start to turn on each other. Anna is forced to make a difficult decision that will change her life forever.
