Pablo Picasso was born on October 25th, 1881, in the city of Málaga, Andalusia, in southern Spain. His father, José Ruiz y Blasco, was a professor of art at the local art academy. His mother, María Picasso y López, was a homemaker. Pablo had two sisters, Lola and Conchita.In 1895, the family moved to La Coruña, in the north of Spain. Pablo enrolled in the art academy there, but he was soon bored with the traditional teaching methods. In 1897, he went to Madrid to study at the prestigious Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.Picasso’s time in Madrid was short-lived. He soon became disillusioned with the academic approach to art and left for Barcelona, where he met his lifelong friend, the artist Carlos Casagemas. In Barcelona, Picasso became involved in the city’s vibrant artistic scene. He also began to experiment with new styles of painting.In 1900, Picasso moved to Paris, the center of the art world. There, he met other avant-garde artists, such as Henri Matisse and Georges Braque. Together, they would revolutionize the art world with their groundbreaking new style, Cubism.Over the course of his long career, Picasso created thousands of artworks in a wide variety of styles. He is widely considered to be one of the most important artists of the 20th century.Picasso died on April 8th, 1973, at the age of 91.
