The Magna Carta, also known as the Great Charter, is a document that was written in 1215 by a group of English barons. The document was created in an attempt to force King John of England to agree to certain demands. The Magna Carta is considered to be one of the most important documents in history as it established the principle that everyone is subject to the law, even the king. The Magna Carta also includes a number of other clauses which established basic rights and freedoms, such as the right to a trial by jury.
