Oliver Barrett IV is a wealthy jock from a preppy, WASP family who attends Harvard University. He meets Jennifer Cavilleri, a working-class Radcliffe student, and they fall in love, despite the objections of his father and her mother.
After graduation, they marry against their parents’ wishes and move to New York City, where Oliver works as a stockbroker and Jennifer as a music teacher. They struggle to make ends meet, but their love for each other is strong.
One day, Jennifer is diagnosed with leukemia. Oliver is devastated, but he remains by her side as she undergoes treatment. Sadly, Jennifer dies, leaving Oliver heartbroken.
