Helena Maria Viramontes is a Chicana writer known for her novels and short stories that explore the lives of Chicana women. Viramontes was born in 1954 in East Los Angeles, California, to Mexican immigrant parents. She attended California State University, Los Angeles, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English. After college, she worked as a teacher and a social worker before turning to writing full-time. Her first novel, The Moths and Other Stories (1985), won the PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Fiction. Her other works include Under the Feet of Jesus (1995), Their Dogs Came with Them (2007), and The Inland Sea (2018).
