In this poem, John Dryden used the biblical story of Absalom’s rebellion against his father, King David, as an allegory for the current political situation in England. The poem is written as a dialogue between Absalom and Achitophel, in which the former tries to convince the latter to join his rebellion. Achitophel is hesitant at first, but he eventually agrees to join Absalom’s cause. The poem ends with a warning from Achitophel to all those who would rebel against their rightful king.
