A Prayer for Owen Meany is a novel by John Irving. The novel is set in the 1950s and follows the lives of John Wheelwright and Owen Meany, two best friends who grew up together in the small town of Gravesend, New Hampshire.Owen is a small, odd-looking boy with a high-pitched voice that John Wheelwright finds both annoying and endearing. Owen is also incredibly intelligent and has a photographic memory. He is John’s complete opposite in every way, but the two boys are inseparable.One summer, while the boys are playing catch in the cemetery, Owen hits John’s mother in the head with a baseball, killing her instantly. John’s father blames Owen for the death and banishes him from the family.Owen goes on to have a successful career as a singer and actor, while John becomes a teacher. Despite their different paths in life, the two friends remain close, and John is always there for Owen when he needs him.When Owen is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he asks John to help him fulfill his final wishes. John agrees, and the two friends say their goodbyes. Owen dies peacefully, knowing that he has made a difference in John’s life.
