The educational systems are always trying to find the best way to help students. As a result this can lead to a debate over which type of school courses would be the most beneficial. While people argue that there should be either vocational or general, It would be most strategic to actually have both general and vocational courses mixed into the same schools.

A combination of both courses can actually help students have a set of skills that they can use to pursue a certain career path and encourage them to still go to college or find an alternative that gives them the same results.

While Ms. Glatts is saying that students might not be sure what career path it is they really want and then supports vocational classes but the authors agree that it should be both vocational and general: “balance...needs to be maintained between expanding opportunities for students and inadvertently pushing them down one road or another.” ( para 12 source #1)

While people claim that vocational schools help give job opportunities, costs less, and encourages them to go to college, it makes it harder for the vocational learners to keep the jobs for a longer period of time.

The people who support general ed schools find that it helps them keep up with changes in the workforce. In a test that was made to compare vocational learners and general ed learners the researchers found that, “ Their research did in fact find that the older the employee becomes, the less impact his/her vocational education training can make in the workforce as compared to those with general education background.

This might seem like general ed is the best way because it has a long term impact or that vocational is better because it decreases unemployment rate. However, it’s not one or the other. It is both because

Vocational courses will give them the skill set they need to get that job and have a backup plan but once those vocational courses help students get that job general ed courses should help them maintain that job. General ed courses could help students go straight to college but vocational courses provide the experience and will push them to complete their college degree. According to Wyman, “those who do enter college, more than half of them do not complete their college degree. This results in lost time and greater student loan debt.” (Source 1 para 4)

In conclusion, the school board should use both methods to help the students become more committed while general ed is very useful so is vocational both educational systems help but they aren’t perfect. Providing both courses allows students to fit into the learning style that's right for them and show them multiple ways to get a master's degree.
