In the book Tuesdays With Morrie there’s many lessons you as the reader learn and the characters in the book. These lessons and themes could hit home and inspire you personally.

The two main characters in the book are Mitch Almbom and Morrie Schwartz. Mitch was one of Morrie’s past students from Brandeis University and narrates the book, he had forgotten about his fantasies of becoming a famed musician and despises the hunger for wealth and materialistic needs. Almbom loses his job due to the employees at his newspaper going on strike, he visits Morrie every tuesday and learn valuable lessons about love, money and becoming content.

Morrie is Mitch’s favorite professor from university, Morrie is diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which degenerates cells inside the brain and spine, ALS leaves Morrie almost a shell unable to move but he still thinks and as a professor of sociology he teaches Mitch about life and its meanings.

A lesson that stood out while reading this book is the quote “Love or perish.” a quote by W.H Auden which Morrie recites during a lesson with Mitch.

Morrie states that “In the absence of love, there is a void that can be filled only by loving human relationships.

When love abounds,” This can speak to readers today because in modern day teenagers and adults alike are lacking love, compassion, and empathy for current problems and issues in the world.

With this said, thinking about these quotes could encourage readers to express love and kindness daily.

This quote and lesson speaks to me personally as demonstrating good will and tenderness is something i’ve been aiming to do more this summer and the next school year, reading this book has motivated me even more to do so.

A quote that spoke to me as well is “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” this quote makes you think about the small things in life that you may stress over and instead of getting worked up over irrelevant things you should learn to live life to the fullest.

It gives the reader an almost nihilistic understanding of nothing matters in the end as long as you have fun now while you’re living. I chose to include this lesson due to the fact that recently there has been things that have worried or concerned me but when looking at the big picture, they won't matter in years from now and that it’s healthy to move on and continue life.

The final lesson i’ve chosen from this book is “Learn to forgive yourself and to forgive others.” This final quote i chose because it may be the one that was drawn to me the most and quite possibly others. Today, people are too carried away with what others have done in the past it can leave them consumed by their anger and then becoming a miserable person. Forgiving and forgetting is something i’ve learnt to do over the past year in which i believe others could be inspired to forget, forgive and love themselves. As Morrie is dying from Lou Gehrig's disease he’s learned to forgive others and accept himself which is bittersweet in a way.

Overall, I believe this story and it’s lessons can inspire you to dig deep and understand life in a way different than you do everyday. Personally, i think discussing the meaning of important quotes said in this book can help you understand someone in the way they interpret the story and its purpose. The type of quotes that i was the most attracted to were the ones with almost a carefree and live life to the fullest vibe to them. I think it is important to go out and live while you can and while you’re able to.
