One major behavior that great leaders engage in is consideration. This means that leaders understand and care about the behavior of their employees and how they feel. Essentially the leader wants to be more people-oriented. Some traits that this leadership follows is being friendly, treating all group members/employees as his/her equal, looking out for their employees, and making themselves available for help when it is needed. This leadership behavior is seen in the good example of a leader.
The leader did not play favorites, he would teach when people asked how to do something, and he took time to try and get to know the other people that he would be working with.
However, this behavior was not seen in the bad example of a leader. Specifically, she did not make herself available for help to the other members of the group since she often did not show up on time. Also, when the other team members did not complete the work in her way, she would criticize them and make them do it her way.
Another major behavior that great leaders engage in is called initiating structure.
This leadership style is more task-oriented as opposed to people oriented. Some traits that this leadership style follows are specifically conveying roles to group members, creating a standard of performance, creating a schedule for workers, and making sure all workers are following the standard created. In the good leader example, he portrays some of these traits. When one of the workers was not meeting or following the standard, he fired them.
Also, he conveyed the roles of all the workers within his group. In the bad leader example, she does not represent many of these traits. For one, when she was scheduling work to be completed, she did not create the proper list of items to buy. Also, she did not convey the work to be done in her way at the beginning, which is why she was unsatisfied with the work present to her.
To be a good leader, it is best to apply both of these traits, and not just one individually. It is important to be considerate because it allows an understanding and better communication with the people that work for you. However, it is also important to initiate structure so that your workers know what their roles, the rules and regulations, and the direction that the overall project needs to head to be successful. An example of a good leader in my life was the general manager from my first job when I was sixteen.
First, he did not play favorites. He held every person to the same standard and did not play favorites based on who he liked. Another important leadership trait that he possessed was that he held himself to the same standard that he held all the other people around him. This was good because he provided a good example to the employees. Another characteristic of a good leader he had was his ability to teach. He would show employees exactly how to do something so they knew exactly what they need to do. Another was, he also tried to understand what each employee was going through. He would try to get to know the people he worked with and understand their perspective. The final good characteristic he showed was his authority. He would sometimes have to be tough on people and fire bad employees and though he did not like doing this, he never shied away from this responsibility.
