Her day started off without fuss, and the pantry shelves were laid out with rows of jelly glasses and brown jugs and white stone- china jars which were labeled as to what belonged in them.

She even made sure that the fields were planted in perfectly aligned rows so that they were organized. To ensure that things were done, Granny once fenced in one-hundred acres, digging the fence post holes herself, clamping the wires with just a Negro boys help.

This kind of hard work she said would change a woman. Since she was from the country, she definitely was part of the Southern culture. This explains a lot in that the Southern culture believes in working. For example, most country families were some kind of a farmer.

Her roots show that she was instilled to take care of things. Granny knew that what she had she had to take care of because it was bitter to lose things and she did not believe in letting things waste away. Granny, even on her death bed could not help but think about all the things that needed to be done. She kept telling herself that she would start the next day so that she could get the place back in order. Granny was so organized that despite death knocking on her door, she wanted to make sure that everything would be in tip top order.

She also felt that it was good to be strong enough for everything, even if all she made melted and changed, and slipped under her hands, that by the time she finished, she had almost forgot what you were working for. Being that she had worked hard all her life, it was hard for her to stop trying to tend to everything. She also endured sorrow and happiness in the duration of her life. When Granny was twenty years old, she fell in love with a man named George, and they planned to marry. On her wedding day, she put on her white veil, and set out the wedding cake for a man that never showed up. George had untimely jilted her.

This was a complete heart break for Granny. A wedding day is supposed to be filled with happiness and love, that turns out to be the best day of a bride’s life. This is not what Granny felt. This sorrow of love was something that Granny never actually healed from. This was what Granny dealt with during the rest of her life. She bottled it up inside her as best as she could but sometimes she would break and the emotions would take her over for a bit. Imagine the pain that Granny carried around with her everyday. She was already a strong woman, but the breaks of the heart, unfortunately will break down even the strongest.

She said herself that she prayed against remembering him and against losing her soul in the depths of Hell, and the two things were mingled in one and the thought of him was a smoky cloud from Hell that moved and crept in her head. Luckily, Granny met her husband, John, and recalled that he gave her everything back that George took away. She was able to love again and experience the happiness of love and the extraordinary feeling of a mother’s love. She took care of her children as she cooked for them, sewed and cleaned their clothes, and planted many gardens to feed them.

Even on her death bed, she wished she could go back in time and do it all over again. Even though there was a massive heartbreak inside her, the gift that comes along with being a mother was the best therapy for Granny. In conclusion, we now have a better understanding of Granny Weatherall’s character. Granny was in fact a Southern Woman with Southern values. She was a very caring woman who made sure that people did not go without. She also spent her life with a hole in her heart because of the sorrow that she experienced. A big problem in society is that people judge without actually knowing the person.

There are many things that shape a character and knowing ones past can make it a lot easier to truly understand their character. Granny may have seemed like a hard, stubborn woman, but she carried around a feeble heart. As you can see, she worked hard every day of her life to take care of the things she had. She was someone who you could count on to get a job done. There are many things that she experienced that molded her character in to what it was, a let down on her wedding day, digging and constructing a one-hundred acre fence herself, and keeping her house up being all in a days work.
